Driver preparing a North Macedonia work permit application in 2026

Applying to drive in North Macedonia in 2026 is a two-authority, three-document exercise: a work permit born at the Employment Service Agency, a D visa issued by an embassy, and a residence permit stamped by the Interior Ministry. None of it is mysterious — but the order is fixed, the translations matter, and the drivers who prepare their file before the employer asks are the ones working while others wait. Here is the application, step by step.

Step one: the employer opens the file

Everything starts with a signed job offer. Your employer applies for the work permit through the Employment Service Agency, showing the company’s registration and tax standing, the contract terms, and your qualifications; for standard roles the agency can weigh whether local candidates are available, so employers who document the vacancy properly clear this fastest—budget four to six weeks for the decision.

Step two: your D visa

With the permit approved, visa-required nationals file the long-stay D visa at a North Macedonian embassy or consulate — in your home country or a country where you hold residence. The standard bundle: passport, the approved permit and contract, health insurance, proof of accommodation and funds, a clean criminal record, photos, and paid fees. Where no Macedonian mission exists, applications route through a partner state’s embassy under joint-representation arrangements.

Step three: arrival duties

Land, then move quickly: register your address with the local police within days of arrival — landlords typically assist — and file for the temporary residence permit for work purposes with the Ministry of Interior. The permit runs a year and renews with the contract; carry the card once issued. Our residence card page details the file.

The document rules that decide speed.

Foreign documents want certified Macedonian translations and notarisation; diplomas and records benefit from apostilles from home. Assemble everything before the employer files — refusals and delays here are almost always paperwork, not policy. If an application is refused, you have 15 days to appeal with supporting documents.

The realistic calendar

Contract to cab in roughly two to three months: permit weeks first, visa weeks second, residence formalities after arrival without blocking your start once authorised. Renewals should be filed comfortably before expiry — treat the anniversary as a work deadline, not an option.

The long game

Time here compounds: five years of continuous legal residence opens permanent residence, and the citizenship track begins at eight — with language and integration conditions at that stage. Family reunification is available to permit holders who can show income and housing, realistic on a driver’s wage given local costs. The official overview is available on Invest North Macedonia.

What you sign matters

Check the contract against the floor: at least the statutory minimum (net MKD 24,379, rising by law in March 2026), overtime at 135% or better, Sunday rest, and bank-paid wages. For international rosters, get the per-diem rate and expected trip days in writing — that line decides your real income.

Application red flags

  • Anyone charging you for the work permit itself — the employer’s file, not a product.
  • Offers that dodge written per-diem terms for international work.
  • Suggestions to enter as a tourist and “sort papers later”.
  • Employers unable to show registration or tax standing.

Your side of the file

Have the C or CE licence, references, medical and translations ready before they are requested — our driving licence, Code 95 and tachograph pages cover the professional documents, and the work permit and work visa pages the immigration set.

A week-by-week filing rhythm

Run the application like a delivery schedule. Week one: sign the contract, order your criminal-record certificate and medical, and commission certified Macedonian translations. Weeks two to six: the employer’s permit file sits with the Employment Service Agency — use the wait to book the embassy appointment and assemble the visa bundle so it files the day approval lands. Weeks seven to nine: visa decision, travel booking, accommodation confirmed in writing for the residence file. Arrival week: police registration first, residence application next, bank account for wages third. Drivers who work this rhythm start on schedule; drivers who improvise donate a month to the calendar.

Employer-first: the company obtains your work permit from the Employment Service Agency, you collect a D visa at an embassy, then register with the police and obtain the residence permit after arrival.

Roughly two to three months end to end — four to six weeks for the permit, weeks for the visa, and arrival formalities that don’t block your start once authorised.

What documents will I need?

Passport, approved permit and contract, health insurance, accommodation and funds proof, clean criminal record, photos — with certified Macedonian translations and notarisation where required.
