A Category A driving license (in Turkish, A sınıfı sürücü belgesi) is Turkey’s full, unrestricted motorcycle license, the top of the motorcycle ladder. It lets you ride any motorcycle, with no limits on power, engine size, or power-to-weight ratio. This guide explains what Class A covers in Turkey, the two routes to get it, the age rules, and what it means for larger tricycles.
Since reforms became effective on 1 January 2016, Turkish driving license rules have been brought more in line with EU regulations. The Ministry of National Education regulates driving license exams, while the license itself is issued by the General Directorate of Security (Emniyet Genel Müdürlüğü). Our driving license in Turkey and the license eligibility pages are good starting points.
What is a Class A license in Turkey?
Class A covers motorcycles with no power restriction; there is no limit on displacement, power, or power-to-weight ratio. It is the highest motorcycle category and the only one that lets you ride the most powerful bikes on all Turkish roads.
A in the motorcycle ladder
A is the top of the three motorcycle categories in Turkey:
- A1: light motorcycles up to 125 cc and 11 kW, from age 16.
- A2: motorcycles up to 35 kW, from age 18.
- A: unrestricted motorcycles, by staged access from 20 (after two years holding A2) or direct entry from 24.
What can you ride with a Class A license?
With Class A, you can ride any motorcycle, regardless of power or engine size, and use all roads. This opens up the full range of machines, large touring and adventure bikes, powerful sports bikes, and big cruisers that are off-limits in the lower categories.
Two routes: staged access and direct entry
There are two ways to reach a full Class A license in Turkey:
- Staged access from age 20, if you have held A2 for at least two years.
- Direct entry from age 24, with no need to hold A2 first.
Staged access from A2
If you have held an A2 for two years, you can extend your A license to Class A by passing a practical test on a Class A motorcycle. The theory exam you already passed for A2 is not repeated.
Direct entry at 24
If you go straight to Class A without holding A2, the minimum age is 24. You complete the full theory and practical training and pass both exams before the General Directorate of Security issues your license.
Training and documentation
Training is conducted through licensed driving schools, combining classroom instruction on traffic rules with practical riding lessons. To enroll, applicants typically need a criminal record certificate, an official health report from a state or private clinic, and a blood group certificate, in addition to the standard course fee.
Medical requirements
All applicants must provide an official health report confirming fitness to ride before the license is issued; the report is valid for a limited period from the date of issue.
Automatic transmission restriction
Worth knowing: if you take the practical exam on a motorcycle with an automatic transmission, your license will be restricted to automatic motorcycles, consistent with EU-style practice. If you want to ride any motorcycle, take the test on a manual.
Licenses you get with A
A full Class A license includes A2 and A1, so you can also ride mid-power and light motorcycles. It is the complete two-wheel entitlement, with no power limit to work around.
Validity
Turkish driving licenses are typically issued with a 10-year validity period before renewal. If you already hold a motorcycle or heavy-vehicle license category, it is automatically carried over to a new Turkish driving license card.
How is your license issued?
Once you pass the required theory and practical exams and provide the necessary documentation, the General Directorate of Security issues your license card showing the Class A entitlement.
Tips for getting your Class A license in Turkey
- If you already hold A2, use staged access from 20 just for the practical test.
- For direct entry, gather your criminal record certificate, health report, and blood group certificate early, as all three are typically required to enroll.
- Take the test on a manual bike unless you only want to ride automatics.
- Confirm current lesson counts and fees with your chosen driving school before enrolling.
- If you are relocating to Turkey from abroad, check whether your foreign license can be exchanged rather than retested, since Turkey allows this for many countries.

License categories, vehicle definitions, ages, medical standards, training requirements, and fees can change and may vary by case and by authority in Turkey. Always confirm the current rules with the official Turkish government sources before making decisions. Turkey is not an EU or EEA member, so its rules are set independently by the Ministry of National Education and the General Directorate of Security. However, the category structure has been progressively aligned with EU practice since 2016. FastDriver.eu accepts no liability for actions taken based on this information.
