Motorcyclist riding in Germany with a Category A licence

A Category A driving license (in German, Führerschein Klasse A) is Germany’s full, unrestricted motorcycle license, the top of the motorcycle ladder. It lets you ride any motorcycle, with no limits on power, engine size, or power-to-weight ratio, from big tourers and adventure bikes to the most powerful sports machines. This guide explains what Class A covers in Germany, the two routes to get it, the age rules, the training and exams, and what it means for larger tricycles.

In Germany, training and testing are conducted through a driving school (Fahrschule), and the license is issued by the local licensing authority (Führerscheinstelle). Our driving license in Germany and the license eligibility pages are good starting points.

What is a Class A license in Germany?

Class A covers motorcycles with no power restrictions, no limit on displacement, power, or power-to-weight ratio, and also motor tricycles with power over 15 kW. It is the highest motorcycle category and the only one that lets you ride the most powerful bikes on all roads.

A in the motorcycle ladder

A is the top of the three motorcycle categories in Germany:

  • A1: light motorcycles up to 125 cc and 11 kW, from age 16.
  • A2: motorcycles up to 35 kW, from age 18.
  • A: unrestricted motorcycles, by staged access from 20 or direct entry from 24.

What can you ride with a Class A license?

With Class A, you can ride any motorcycle, regardless of power or engine size, carry a passenger, and use all roads. This opens up the full range of machines, large touring and adventure bikes, powerful sports bikes, and big cruisers that are off-limits in the lower categories.

Two routes: staged access and direct entry

There are two ways to reach a full Class A license in Germany, and they differ sharply in age and effort:

  • Staged access from age 20, if you have held A2 for at least two years.
  • Direct entry from age 24, with no need to hold A2 first.

For motor tricycles with a power output over 15 kW, the minimum age is 21.

Staged access from A2

This is the quicker, cheaper route if you work your way up the ladder. If you have held A2 for two years, you are promoted to Class A with no theory training and no theory exam. You pass a practical test on a Class A motorcycle. If you took A2 at 18, this route means you can hold Class A from 20.

Direct entry at 24

If you go straight to Class A without holding A2, the minimum age is 24 (training can begin six months before). You complete the full theory and practical training and pass both the theory and practical exams. If you already hold a car license, the general theory is treated as done, so only the motorcycle-specific theory applies.

The compulsory further training

Further motorcycle-specific training requirements apply the first time you gain a motorcycle license in Germany, similar to the multi-phase training used in some neighboring countries. Requirements and course structure vary by federal state (Bundesland), so confirm the current requirement with your Fahrschule before booking.

Medical and first-aid requirements

For direct entry, or when Class A is your first license, you must provide evidence of adequate eyesight and complete a first-aid course. A first-aid course you have already completed for a car license generally remains valid.

Automatic transmission restriction

Worth knowing: if you take the practical exam on a motorcycle with an automatic transmission, your license will be restricted to automatic machines. If you want to ride any motorcycle, take the test on a manual.

Licenses you get with A

A full Class A license includes A2, A1, and AM, so you can also ride mid-power and light motorcycles and mopeds. It is the complete two-wheel entitlement, with no power limit to work around.

Validity and probation

The Class A entitlement is not time-limited, unlike the truck and bus categories; the card document carries the standard 15-year validity period before renewal. If Class A is your first driving license, a probationary period with a strict alcohol limit applies.

How is your license issued?

Your driving school handles most of the paperwork with the Führerscheinstelle. Once you pass the required test, you receive a temporary license, and your card license (Scheckkartenführerschein) follows.

Tips for getting your Class A license in Germany

  • If you already hold A2, use staged access from 20: no theory, just a practical test.
  • For direct entry, arrange your first-aid course and eyesight evidence early.
  • Take the test on a manual bike unless you only want to ride automatics.
  • Confirm current further-training requirements with your Fahrschule, since they vary by state.
  • Note that powerful tricycles fall under Class A from age 21.

Reach the top of the motorcycle ladder.

A Class A license gives you the freedom to ride any motorcycle in Germany and completes the two-wheel ladder. As you progress through the licensing system and, in time, toward professional car, truck, or bus categories, you can register in the driver section, explore vacancies, and see what employers are hiring for on FastDriver.eu, along with our guides on the jobs pages.

Not on the staged route from A2, only the practical test. By direct entry, you take both theory and practical exams (general theory is treated as done if you already hold a car license).

What is the compulsory further training?

Motorcycle-specific further training is required the first time you gain a motorcycle license. Requirements vary by federal state, so confirm with your Fahrschule.
