Andorra's December 2024 reform genuinely reshaped D1E: a new CAP route drops the minimum age to 18, while the previous hard 70-year cap on driving this category has been eliminated entirely. This piece covers what D1E authorizes and both of these significant, very recent changes.

What Category D1E covers

D1E authorizes a combination of vehicles formed from a D1-category tractor vehicle and a trailer with a maximum authorized mass exceeding 750 kg.

Minimum age

The standard minimum age is 21. With the Capacitació d'Aptitud per a Conductors (CAP), this drops to 18, matching the neighboring French and Spanish systems with which Andorra's regulation is now harmonized.

You need D1 first

In both the standard route and the CAP route, you need to already hold Category D1 before applying for D1E.

The elimination of the 70-year age cap

This is genuinely significant if you're driving professionally later in life. Andorra's new regulation removes the previous hard limit of 70 years for driving C1, C, D1, and D-category vehicles, a change that extends to D1E and DE as part of the same professional category family, bringing Andorra in line with the EU baseline regulation and neighboring countries.

What replaces the old age cap

Rather than a hard stop, medical reviews become genuinely more thorough from 70 onward. Beyond the special medical certificate already required for these categories, you'll additionally need a psychotechnical test, a blood analysis, and a psychiatric assessment.

New validity periods for Group 2 categories

Renewal periods have changed for Group 2 (professional) categories, including D1E, as well as B2E, C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D, and DE, as part of the same broader reform that adjusted renewal cycles across the professional license family.

Why the reform happened

The Andorran government has explicitly linked these changes to a shortage of professional drivers, particularly in passenger transport, following the expansion and the introduction of free access to national public transport lines.

Documents you'll need

  • A special official medical certificate, obtained from Clínica Verge de Meritxell
  • Your existing D1 license
  • One recent color photograph (35x45mm), white background
  • Parental or guardian authorization, if you're a minor, with the parent or guardian holding their own license for at least 5 years

Automatic transmission

As with other systems in the region, testing on an automatic-transmission vehicle typically restricts the resulting license to automatic machines only.

DE: the full-size equivalent

DE requires 24, dropping to 21 with CAP, and requires you to already hold full Category D. It follows the same combination-vehicle logic as D1E, scaled up for full-size buses.

Removing prior-experience requirements

Andorra's updated regulation also removed the previous requirement for a full year's prior experience in lower categories before progressing to the next step, toward harmonization with EU Directive 2006/126/CE and practices in France and Spain.

Where D1E sits in Andorra's licensing system

D1E sits above the standalone D1, specifically for heavier trailer combinations, and is part of Andorra's Group 2 professional category family alongside C1E and CE.

Tips that actually help

  • If you're 18-20 and want to start D1E early, look into the CAP process, effective since early 2025.
  • If you're approaching 70 and still driving D1E professionally, prepare for the fuller medical review that now replaces the old hard cutoff.
  • Keep track of your renewal cycle under the new age-based validity periods.
  • Gather your special medical certificate from Clínica Verge de Meritxell well ahead of your application.

Where this fits going forward

D1E in Andorra has genuinely modernized, opening access to younger drivers through CAP while extending opportunities for older professional drivers as well. If your plans extend toward professional driving down the line, take a look at the driver section, browse current vacancies, or see who's hiring among employers on FastDriver.eu, as well as our broader job guides.
