How to Get a Category D1 Driving Licence in Poland?

From 3 September 2026, Poland actually transforms access to D1: with an initial professional qualification, you can hold it from just 18, and, unlike the parallel reform for full Category D, D1 at 18 carries no route-distance restriction at all. What Category D1 covers

D1 authorizes buses up to 8 meters long, designed to carry no more than 17 people total, including the driver. In everyday terms, this covers vehicles like the Mercedes Sprinter City, Iveco Daily with minibus bodywork, or Ford Transit Minibus, typically seating 11 to 18 depending on configuration.

Minimum age

The standard minimum age is 21. From 3 September 2026, this drops to 18 for candidates who've obtained an initial professional qualification (kwalifikacja wstępna) under Poland's Road Transport Act.

The significant part of this reform

This is useful to understand carefully. Full Category D, under the same reform, also drops to 18 with an initial qualification, but only for regular-service routes not exceeding 50 km in one direction. D1 (and D1+E) carry no such distance limitation for 18-year-old holders with qualification. If you're 18 and hold D1, you can drive scheduled routes of any length, something a same-aged D-category driver really cannot do.

How is the 50 km limit measured for full Category D

For context, since this distinction matters: the 50 km threshold that applies to full Category D at 18 is measured along the actual route length, from the first to the last stop, not as the crow flies, and covers the entire journey. In Warsaw, for instance, this comfortably covers most typical municipal ZTM lines, including neighborhood and district routes.

Before you can enroll in the PKK profile

Before starting any driving course, you need to establish a Profil Kandydata na Kierowcę (PKK, candidate driver profile) at your local Wydział Komunikacji (communications department). The process itself is free, though you'll need a current photograph, typically costing 30–50 zł.

Code 95: still required for commercial work

Regardless of the age at which you obtain D1, holding the license alone doesn't authorize professional passenger transport. You'll also need code 95, a confirmed professional qualification entered on your license or driver qualification card, plus periodic refresher training every 5 years.

What full Category D requires beyond D1

Full Category D covers vehicles designed to carry more than 9 people, including the driver, with no upper limit, from small passenger buses to large articulated coaches and city buses.

Automatic transmission

As with other EU-aligned systems, testing on an automatic-transmission vehicle typically restricts the resulting license to automatic machines only.

Emergency services exception

Police officers and other uniformed service members (State Fire Service, Border Guard, State Protection Service) operating D-category vehicles have a minimum age of 21 under the reformed rules; officers over 21 don't need initial qualification to drive these vehicles in the course of their duties, though they still need a PKK profile.

D1+E: adding a heavier trailer

D1+E follows the same new-age thresholds as D1 itself; if you're 18 with a qualification, you can hold D1+E under the same terms, without the 50 km restriction that applies to D+E.
