Truck Driver Jobs in Norway and Salary Guide for 2026

Truck driver salary guide for Norway 2026 on a mountain highway route

Norway pays drivers through a system most of Europe doesn’t have: no national minimum wage at all, but a legally binding sector floor that applies to every truck on Norwegian roads — including foreign carriers. Stack the generalised hourly rate, the tax-free travel allowance, a 40% overtime premium and Scandinavian base pay, and the arithmetic gets serious quickly. This is the 2026 salary guide, number by number.

The floor: NOK 229 an hour, by law

The road-freight collective agreement has been allmenngjort — generalised — which makes its minimum legally binding on every employer in the sector. Since 1 June 2025, the floor is NOK 229 per hour (about €20.45) for goods transport in vehicles over 2.5 tonnes, extended that month to cover vans as well as heavy trucks. The Labour Inspection Authority enforces it, roadside and in payroll; Arbeidstilsynet publishes the official rates.

Diet: the second salary

Multi-day trips carry a mandatory daily allowance — NOK 726 per full travel day in 2026, tax-free at the domestic rate, with a quarter-rate accruing per commenced six-hour block on partial days. Two rules sharpen it: diett must be paid on top of wages, never folded into the hourly rate, and no day of a multi-day run (bar the first and last) may be paid below 7.5 hours. For long-distance drivers on the Oslo–Bergen–Trondheim–Tromsø arteries, diet alone typically adds €9,000–15,000 per year.

What the market actually pays

Floors are floors; the market sits higher. Statistics Norway’s figures put the average truck-driver salary near €3,600 a month before tax. They experienced long-haul drivers on strong rosters land meaningfully above it once overtime — a statutory minimum 40% premium — and diet are counted. The 2025 settlement added NOK 7 an hour for goods-transport drivers, one of the strongest rounds in years, and sector wage growth projections remain the healthiest in Northern Europe.

Gross to net, honestly

Norwegian tax is progressive with a top marginal rate near 47%. Still, a typical driver’s effective tax burden lands far lower — commonly in the high-20s to low-30s per cent — and a tax-free diet shifts real income further in your favour. Holiday pay of 10.2–12% accrues on top of wages, and employers fund an occupational pension besides.

The cost-of-living counterweight

Be honest with the other column: a central Oslo one-bedroom runs roughly NOK 12,000–18,000 a month, and daily costs are among Europe’s highest — though smaller cities and districts are considerably gentler. Long-haul drivers, fed by diet, spend less at home than their pay slips suggest. The saving rate for a disciplined driver remains excellent.

Who can access this market?

EEA drivers take jobs freely, registering with the authorities after three months. Third-country drivers need a residence permit for skilled workers built on documented vocational driver training, with pay at collective-agreement levels — requirements are strict and case-specific, so verify your profile against official guidance before planning. Our work permit and work visa pages sort the categories.

Reading a Norwegian offer

  • Confirm the hourly rate meets or beats NOK 229 — below it is illegal, full stop.
  • Get the diet stated separately, with expected trip days per month.
  • Check overtime terms: 40% is the legal minimum, not the ceiling.
  • Ask where nights are spent; employer-arranged accommodation on assignments is the norm.

Credentials that unlock the pay

A CE licence with professional competence and a tachograph card is the entry ticket; winter competence is the multiplier — see our driving licence, Code 95 and tachograph pages for recognition and renewal in Norway.

A worked month, end to end.

Put the pieces together for an illustrative long-haul month: around 160 base hours at the NOK 229 floor rate are roughly NOK 36,600; twenty overtime hours at the statutory minimum 40% premium add about NOK 6,400; and a dozen full travel days of diett at NOK 726 contribute another NOK 8,700 — tax-free. That is a month above NOK 51,000 before tax at the legal minimum rates, before market premiums, night supplements or holiday-pay accrual enter the picture. Few European pay systems let a driver verify the arithmetic this cleanly — every number above is published law, not an employer promise.

Put the numbers to work.

FAQs

What is the minimum wage for truck drivers in Norway?

NOK 229 per hour (about €20.45) since 1 June 2025 — the generalised road-freight rate that legally binds every employer in the sector, foreign carriers included, for vehicles over 2.5 tonnes.

What is a diet, and how much is it?

The mandatory daily travel allowance for multi-day trips: NOK 726 per full day in 2026 at the tax-free domestic rate, paid on top of wages, with partial days accruing a quarter-rate per six-hour block.

What do Norwegian drivers earn on average?

Around €3,600 a month before tax, according to official statistics, with experienced long-haul drivers earning more once 40% minimum overtime and diet are added.

How heavy are Norwegian taxes for drivers?

Progressive, but a typical driver’s effective rate lands in the high-20s to low-30s per cent — and diett is tax-free, with 10.2–12% holiday pay accruing on top.

Can foreign drivers work in Norway?

EEA citizens can drive freely, with registration after three months; third-country drivers need a skilled-worker residence permit based on documented vocational training, with strict, case-specific requirements.

Is any day on a long trip paid less than a full shift?

No — on multi-day journeys, every day except the first and last must be paid for at no less than 7.5 hours.
