A Category DE driving licence is the licence that lets you tow a heavy trailer behind a bus or coach in Europe — the top of the passenger-driving ladder. If you already hold a Category D bus licence and you need to pull a trailer for luggage, equipment or baggage on tour and long-distance work, DE is the entitlement you need. This guide explains what DE covers, who can apply, why there is usually no theory test, the practical test, the generous bundle of entitlements that comes with it, when you also need Code 95, and how DE completes a professional passenger-driving career.
The framework is set by EU law, but each country decides on training, fees, and the exact test format, so use this as the European overview and confirm the details where you live. Our driving licence in Europe and licence eligibility pages are good starting points.
What is a Category DE driving licence?
DE lets you drive a Category D bus or coach (more than 8 passengers, no upper limit) towing a trailer with a maximum authorised mass over 750 kg. There is no upper weight limit on the combination. It is the heaviest passenger category and the natural top of the bus-and-coach ladder. The trailer must not be used to carry passengers.
DE, D and D1E: how they fit together
- D1E — a D1 minibus with a trailer over 750 kg, combination up to 12,000 kg.
- D — a full bus or coach with a trailer only up to 750 kg.
- DE — a full Category D bus or coach with a heavy trailer over 750 kg, no upper combination limit.
You must hold Category D before you can add DE — you cannot go straight from a car licence to DE.
What can you drive with a DE licence?
DE covers a bus or coach pulling a heavier trailer, mainly used for tour and long-distance work: coaches with baggage or luggage trailers, equipment trailers for tour groups and events, and similar combinations. It is the least common of the bus categories, but important for operators who run touring and long-distance services.
Who can apply for a DE licence?
- You must already hold a valid Category D bus and coach licence.
- The minimum age is generally 24, or 21 if you hold the Code 95 professional qualification.
- You must meet the higher medical standards for passenger vehicles.
Usually, there is no theory test.
Here is the good news: if you already hold a D, in most countries, DE requires only a practical test. Your Category D licence already covers the theory, so there is no separate DE theory exam. After some practice towing a trailer, you go straight to the practical test, which makes DE quicker to obtain than your first bus licence.
The practical test
The DE practical test focuses on the skills that matter when towing behind a bus or coach: coupling and uncoupling safely, checking the load and brakes, reversing and manoeuvring the longer combination, and controlling speed and braking with the extra weight, all while keeping passenger comfort and safety in mind.
Licences you get automatically.
DE comes with a generous bundle of entitlements. In most countries, DE holders automatically receive D1, D1, E, and BE, and if you also hold Category C, you gain CE as well, since the trailer entitlement carries over. So passing your DE test can unlock several categories at once.
Do you also need Code 95?
For professional passenger driving, yes. The DE licence lets you drive the combination, but to drive it for hire or reward, or in connection with a business, you also need the Code 95 professional qualification, the Driver CPC for passenger transport. Code 95 involves an initial qualification followed by 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years. If you only drive on a genuine non-commercial basis, you generally do not need it. Read our guide to Code 95, and note that professional driving also brings tachograph rules.
Medical, validity and renewal
Like all the passenger and truck categories, DE is issued for a shorter period than a car licence — commonly five years — and renewal requires passing the medical examination again, including an eyesight check. Shorter validity and more frequent medicals apply to older drivers. Keep track of your expiry date and book your renewal medical in good time so your entitlement does not lapse.
The top of the passenger ladder
DE is the highest passenger-vehicle category. With Category D, DE and Code 95, you can take on the full range of bus and coach work, including touring and long-distance services with trailers, where demand is strong across Europe. Tips for getting your DE licence
- Make sure your Category D licence is in place first — DE always builds on it.
- Practise reversing and manoeuvring the combination, which catches out most candidates.
- Decide whether you will drive commercially — if so, plan Code 95 alongside DE.
- Check what comes bundled with DE in your country, such as D1, D1E, BE and CE.
- Book your medical and renewal in good time, as the passenger categories are time-limited.
