Complete Sweden Truck Driver Guide for Foreign Drivers

Sweden has a large, well-regulated transport sector and treats foreign workers on genuinely equal terms — in pay. Conditions must match Swedish collective agreements, and the union is consulted on every hire. The system is orderly and employer-led, but two things decide whether it works for you: the salary requirement and, for many non-EU drivers, the licence question. This guide is honest about both.

Who Needs Work Authorisation

Citizens of the EU and EEA work freely. Everyone else needs a work permit from the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket), applied for and granted before entering Sweden as a rule. The employer starts the process in the Agency’s e-service.

What the Employer Must Do

Before hiring you, the employer must advertise the vacancy in Sweden and across the EU/EEA and Switzerland for at least ten days — typically via the Public Employment Service’s job portal, which also feeds EURES. The employment agreement is signed after the advert period, the relevant trade union is given the chance to comment on the terms, and the employer must arrange the required insurances by the start date. Terms must be at least on par with Swedish collective agreements.

The Salary Requirement — Read This Carefully

Sweden ties work permits to a salary floor linked to the national median salary published by Statistics Sweden. Under the current rules, your monthly salary must be at least 90 per cent of the median at the time of application and match collective-agreement levels for the occupation. Driver pay under Swedish collective agreements can clear this bar, especially with recurring shift and overtime supplements that count as salary, but not every driver offer will — so check the live figure on the Migration Agency’s site and get the offer in writing before committing.

The Licence Question — Plan for It

An EU/EEA licence is fully recognised. But Sweden exchanges very few non-EU licences: most cannot be swapped, and after a limited period of validity, you must go through the Swedish licensing process, including for the heavy categories. Professional driving also requires the Swedish professional competence certificate YKB, which is Code 95, plus the digital tachograph driver card and a medical certificate. Pay, Tax and Social Security

Collective agreements set solid driver pay, with per diem allowances for international routes. Upon arrival, you register with the Tax Agency (Skatteverket) for a personal identity number, which unlocks access to banking, healthcare, and everyday life. The permit is tied to the employer and occupation at first; a new job means a new application, though you can usually start once it is submitted. Your family can accompany you and generally has the right to work with you. After a qualifying period of work permit years, you can apply for permanent residence.
