Most notably, the large-scale guest-worker route that many agencies used has been suspended for new applicants, so the practical path for a non-EU driver is the employment-purpose residence permit, which is more demanding.

Who Needs Work Authorisation

If you hold EU, EEA or Swiss citizenship, you can work freely. Everyone else needs a residence permit that authorises employment, issued by the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (Országos Idegenrendészeti Főigazgatóság). Employers manage much of the process electronically through the Enter Hungary platform.

The Current Route: Employment-Purpose Residence Permit

With the guest-worker route suspended, a non-EU driver generally comes on an employment-purpose residence permit. The employer attests to the role; a work permit or labour-market assessment confirms that no suitable Hungarian or EU worker is available; and the permit is tied to a specific employer and job—an annual national quota limits the total number, so timing matters. Permits are usually issued for up to two years with a possible extension.

Nationality Matters

Some routes depend heavily on nationality. Certain neighbouring nationalities may use a National Card, while highly qualified workers may use the EU Blue Card or the Hungarian Card. For most driving roles, the employment-purpose permit is the relevant route, and an honest assessment of your nationality and starting point is the most useful first step.

You secure a job offer, the employer files through Enter Hungary, and you apply for a Type D visa at a Hungarian mission to enter and collect the residence permit, then register your accommodation. An EU/EEA licence is recognised; a non-EU licence must be exchanged for a Hungarian EU-standard licence after residence, sometimes with a test.
