Greece needs drivers — transport, tourism logistics and agriculture all pull on the same shrinking labour pool — and it does admit non-EU workers in large numbers. But be honest with yourself about the system: access runs through a region- and speciality-specific advance quota; the employer must win approval before anything else moves; and offices can be slow—plan for that, and the route works.

Who Needs Work Authorisation

Citizens of the EU, the EEA, and Switzerland are free to work and only need to register for longer stays. Everyone else needs to come through the employment provisions of the Greek Migration Code, run by the Ministry of Migration and Asylum together with the labour authorities, ending in a single residence permit for employment that combines work and residence in one document.

The Quota and the Metaklisi Invitation

Greece sets a maximum admissions cap for non-EU workers in a joint ministerial decision issued for a rolling multi-year period, broken down by region and job speciality — including driver and transport roles. The employer then files the metaklisi (invitation) application electronically with the Decentralised Administration of their region, with a signed contract of sufficient length, pay at least at the statutory level for the role, a tax-clearance certificate and a fee. Approval is only possible if your speciality is included in the decision and the regional quota has not yet been used up — which is why timing in the quota cycle matters so much.

Step by Step After Approval

The approval act goes electronically to the Greek consulate in your country, where you apply for the Type D national visa. After entering Greece, you submit the single-permit application with biometrics; under a recent reform, you may start working as soon as the application is lodged and the certificate of submission is issued, without waiting for the card. You also register for a tax number (AFM) and with the social-insurance body (e-EFKA). Initial permits commonly run up to two years and renew in longer blocks while the job and contributions continue. Allow generous time at every stage — backlogs are real.

Your Driving Licence and Code 95

An EU/EEA licence is recognised. Some non-EU licences can be exchanged under bilateral arrangements; otherwise, expect Greek tests. Pay, Tax and Social Security

Driver pay is a base salary — at least the statutory level for the role — plus per diem allowances for international routes. e-EFKA contributions, shared with the employer, bring access to the public health system, and the AFM tax number anchors everything from payroll to renting. Changing Employers, Family and Long-Term Stay

The permit is tied to the employment that justified it, so changing employers has conditions and paperwork — take advice before moving. Family reunification is possible once your residence and income are stable, and continuous lawful residence — commonly five years — can lead to long-term residence with integration conditions. Keep every certificate and receipt; Greek files are paper-hungry.
