Leixões at Matosinhos sets the hiring pattern here, and it is a container port first: over half its tonnage moves in boxes, vehicle traffic grew by a third across the nine months measured, and conventional break bulk fell by more than a quarter. So the competence an employer needs is chassis and ro-ro work rather than tipper or tanker. Inland the district holds a newly completed logistics park at Valongo on the A41, and sixteen of its municipalities carry heavy driver listings. Nowhere else in the north offers that depth.

Porto is a port and distribution district with a large manufacturing tail rather than a factory economy: two thirds of the metropolitan workforce sits in services, inbound tonnage exceeds outbound, and the driver adverts here are placed mostly by temporary work agencies.
Publishing takes five minutes and the wording decides who applies. Call the job motorista de pesados, give the category as C or C+E exactly as Portuguese adverts write it, say whether the CAM must be in hand from the first shift or whether you will pay for the course, and post it at www.fastdriver.eu/jobs/portugal. Name the municipality the vehicle sleeps in, because sixteen of them carry listings and a driver in Penafiel will not read Porto as local.
One thing to be clear about, since this district's adverts come mostly from intermediaries: FastDriver.eu is not one. It is a job portal and nothing more. No empresa de trabalho temporário sits behind it, no driver is on its books, and it never becomes the employer. Your advert, your applications, your interview, your contract.
Here is the conclusion the trade figures stop short of drawing. This metropolitan area imports more than it exports, and Braga district next door does the reverse, so outbound loads are the scarce ones here and the scarce ones there run inbound. A rota written across that boundary fills in both directions. A rota written inside Porto district alone runs light one way, and the driver notices before you do. Recruitment here runs to box and chassis work off the quays, vehicle movements on the growing ro-ro side, warehouse-fed distribution inland, and trunking east over the Marão or north towards the frontier.
Written up as motorista de pesados, carta C+E. Containerised general cargo is over half of what crosses the quays at Matosinhos, so this is chassis and skeletal work, quay to inland terminal and quay to shipper. National haulage, and the port has two container terminals to learn.

Advertised as motorista de pesados on C where the vehicle is a rigid, or motorista de ligeiros on category B if it is a van. Multi-drop out of the estate at Valongo and the smaller warehousing around Trofa and Maia, serving the metropolitan area. National, home nightly, early starts.
C+E linehaul east on the A4, through the Marão tunnel towards Vila Real and on to the Transmontana corridor. Advertised as motorista de pesados, sometimes with tração nacional written into the title. The whole axis lost its tolls on one date, which changed the cost of running it.
Portugal and Spain running on C+E, north up the A3 to the Valença crossing or east on the A4 to Quintanilha. No advert located in this district stated a cross-border scope, so treat the corridor as available rather than as demand anybody has measured.
Candidates in this district read a lot of adverts, most of them from agencies, and they discount the vague ones fast. Give the company name, the municipality, the licence category and what the driver takes home above the base. If the vehicle never leaves the ring roads, say so: a driver who expects nights out and gets multi-drop leaves inside a month.
The district runs from the coast at Matosinhos and Vila do Conde inland to Amarante, and it is the densest in the country at well over seven hundred residents to the square kilometre. Commutes here are measured in ring roads rather than in kilometres, and a driver living out at Penafiel or Marco de Canaveses is on the far side of the metropolitan traffic from the port.
Vila Nova de Gaia is the largest municipality in the district, bigger than Porto itself, and a heavy net importer in its own right. Its average earnings sit below the metropolitan figure, which tells you Porto and Matosinhos are what pull that average up.
Valongo holds the district's one properly sized logistics asset. Panattoni Park Valongo runs to seventy-six thousand square metres of lettable space across two buildings on a site of a hundred and fifty thousand, with eleven metre clear heights and its own access to the A41.
Trofa shows the other end of the same market. Armazéns da Ribeira, in Bougado parish, is three small warehouses with heavy vehicle gates on one site, built for the small and medium operators working the Porto to Braga corridor.
Área Metropolitana do Porto is not this district. It takes in Espinho, Santa Maria da Feira and four more municipalities from Aveiro, and it leaves out Amarante, Penafiel, Paredes and five others that your advert does reach.
Driver work differs sharply between the two port cities, the interior districts on the Spanish corridors, the Alentejo and the two island regions. Open another district to see the hiring information that applies there.
Portuguese drivers search in Portuguese. An advert written only in English will miss most of the domestic market.
Motorista de pesados is the dominant advert title, with motorista de ligeiros second. Pesados and ligeiros, heavy and light, is the first thing a Portuguese advert settles, and a driver reads it before anything else.
Write the licence as C+E. That form appears more often in real adverts than CE.
Two terms that work elsewhere do not work here. Motorista TIR appeared in no advert found, unlike in Romania where it is standard, so an advert using it reads as written from outside the market. Servico iberico was not found either, so describe Portugal and Spain work in plain words rather than reaching for the label. Internacional is the word that signals work beyond the peninsula.
The qualification is the CAM. Adverts list it alongside the cartao de tacografo and ADR where the load needs it. Name only what the role genuinely requires.
Pay needs more than one figure. Portuguese adverts quote a base salary with ajudas de custo, and the TIR premium stated separately where it applies. An advert giving only the base reads as badly paid even when the total is competitive.
Condutor is the formal word that appears in regulations and on documents. Motorista is what the job is called. Use motorista in the advert and keep condutor for the paperwork.
Two scope words do real work in this district's adverts. Nacional appears in the title itself, as in Motorista de Pesados Nacional, and the variant tração nacional turned up verbatim on a Valongo listing. Neither internacional nor any Iberian label appeared on a vacancy located here, so a driver reading your advert will take an unmarked title as domestic.

Portugal is more open than most of Europe on this, and it is worth saying plainly because employers rarely believe it. There is no labour market test and no quota for a work visa. You are not required to demonstrate that no Portuguese or EU candidate was available.
What has changed is the way in. The route that allowed someone to enter and regularise afterwards has been abolished, and a great deal of guidance still online describes it. Acting on that guidance would cost months. The visa now has to be obtained before travel.
The same applies to the Portuguese speaking countries route, which was known for allowing entry first and paperwork later. It now requires a residence visa obtained in the country of origin. For Brazilian recruitment in particular, that is the single biggest practical change in recent years.
One planning point is worth more than the rest put together. The residence visa itself authorises work for an initial period, so the start date is not tied to the processing queue for the residence card. Employers who think the driver cannot begin until the card arrives have the sequence wrong and lose weeks to it.
The job seeker visa does not help here. It was restricted to highly qualified work and a driving role does not come within it.
Employers in Porto may receive applications from drivers based in Portugal, elsewhere in the EU and EEA, Switzerland, the Portuguese speaking countries, the wider European region, Asia, Africa, North America, Latin America and other eligible international markets.
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens may work in Portugal without authorisation. Licence validity and the professional qualification still apply to them exactly as they do to a Portuguese driver.
One employer duty has a short fuse and catches people out. The hire has to be reported to Social Security in the twenty four hours before the contract takes effect, not afterwards. There is a second notification to the labour authority before work begins, which almost no published guidance covers. Penalties scale with the size of the company and can include repayment of public funding and publication of the decision.
A candidate's ability to work here depends on nationality, residence status, professional qualifications, driving licence validity and the requirements of the individual position. Name the licence category in the advert. A Portuguese driver reads it first, and C+E in the headline settles whether the job is theirs.
Freight work uses C and C+E, with C1 and C1E for lighter rigid vehicles. Passenger transport uses D and D1.
Ages depend on which qualification route the driver took, which is unusual and worth understanding. C and CE open at twenty one, or at eighteen for a driver holding the full professional qualification. D and DE open at twenty four, or at twenty one on the same basis. The shorter accelerated route does not buy the same reduction, so two drivers of the same age can hold different entitlements.
Every heavy renewal needs a medical assessment and a psychological one. Both, not one.
There is an age limit that catches fleets out. At sixty seven a CE entitlement drops to a much lower weight, and the passenger categories end and cannot be renewed. Worth knowing before a rota is built around one driver.
Foreign licence exchange splits three ways, and the middle tier is where offers die. Drivers from the Portuguese speaking countries and from OECD states exchange every category with no driving examination, with a psychological assessment for the heavy ones. Drivers from other convention countries exchange only the light categories directly and must sit Portuguese theory and practical tests for anything heavy. Drivers from countries outside the conventions cannot drive on the licence at all.
Brazil is the one to get right, because of the volume. The recognition arrangement covers car and motorcycle categories only, so a Brazilian driver cannot work heavy on the Brazilian licence. They can exchange into a Portuguese heavy licence without an examination, which is a good position, but the exchange is not optional and it has to happen before they drive for you.
Then there is the ninety day trap. A driver has ninety days from establishing residence to lodge the exchange while still driving. After that they may lodge for up to two years, but they may not drive in the meantime. Past two years a practical test becomes compulsory. Employers plan around the two year figure and miss the ninety day one, and the driver sits idle while the file moves.
A professional qualification obtained outside the EU or EEA is not recognised. The real sequence is exchange the licence, then take the accelerated initial qualification, then pass the aptitude examination. Budget for all three rather than for the visa alone.
Portugal has no state forklift licence. The permission rests on certified training plus the employer's own written authorisation. The driver attestation needed for a third country national is issued by the IMT and requires a declaration from the labour authority that the driver is lawfully employed. Verifying the original documents remains the employer's responsibility.
Three administrative points bear on a Porto operation. No IMT delegation in this district could be confirmed, even though the northern directorate is understood to sit in the city, so the nearest counter this research could verify is at Braga, open weekdays only from nine in the morning until four in the afternoon. Marked dangerous goods loads cannot run on the listed approach roads into Lisboa and Porto on Monday mornings between seven and ten, with July and August exempt, which is a genuine constraint on a Monday start out of a Gaia or Maia yard. And IMT has introduced heavy vehicle rules on the VCI ring road with effect from the fifteenth of September: the substance of them could not be retrieved, so put that one to IMT before routing a vehicle onto it.

Solid and liquid bulk together account for under a third, and conventional break bulk fell by more than a quarter over the nine months measured. An advert built around tipper or tanker experience fishes in the wrong pool here.
In tonnage, no. It moved close to twenty million tonnes before the Petrogal refinery closed, and it moves around fourteen million now; it slipped about three per cent again in the most recent full year. Liquid bulk is still falling. The box and vehicle side is what grows, so this port is changing shape rather than expanding, and the driver mix should follow suit.
Galician ports, not Lisbon ones. Leixões and A Coruña sit within a few hundred thousand tonnes of each other and have traded the lead of the northwest Iberian peninsula between them, with Ferrol, Vigo, Marín and Vilagarcía behind. Cargo routing decisions, and so driver demand, respond to what Vigo and A Coruña quote. The port’s own stated catchment reaches about sixty kilometres and into northwestern Spain.
Both ways, and the timing matters more than the direction. The single-track line from Porto Campanhã to Leça do Balio is the port’s only rail access, and it is under a rebuild lasting about two years, with sidings lengthened at Contumil and São Mamede de Infesta and level crossings removed. During the works, the road carries more of the inland leg. Afterwards, the line takes 750-metre trains.
One, with a caveat worth respecting. Torrestir is profiled as having a Porto headquarters, around two thousand employees, sixteen terminals, and sixteen hundred vehicles. Still, the profile names the city rather than the municipality and includes no date, so don’t quote an address from it. We searched for three other large Portuguese operators, and none could be confirmed as based here. The visible advert placers are agencies: Job Impulse, Job and Talent, Triangle, and D’ACCORD.
Whichever municipality the vehicle sleeps in; there are sixteen to choose from. Heavy driver listings appeared across Porto, Maia, Gondomar, Vila Nova de Gaia, Santo Tirso, Paços de Ferreira, Trofa, Paredes, Penafiel, Lousada, Marco de Canaveses, Valongo, Amarante, Espinho, Póvoa de Varzim and Vila do Conde. Porto itself has top-level entry in the national directories, as do Lisboa, Braga, Coimbra, Aveiro, Leiria, and Faro.
None could be confirmed, and that is an odd result rather than a verdict on the district. Braga, Bragança, Vila Real, and Viseu all produced a named, sized anchor plant in the same research; Porto did not. Treat it as a hole in the evidence rather than as a claim that the industry is absent, because this metropolitan area holds over fourteen thousand manufacturing firms employing more than a hundred and seventy thousand people.
Meaningfully more than the national aggregate, which is the useful part. Five of the seven listings captured here stated pay, ranging from a floor well above the aggregator’s stated average for motorista roles to a ceiling roughly two-thirds higher than that floor. Light vehicle and distribution work drag down the national average, so benchmarking a C+E vacancy against it will price you out. Seven adverts is a small sample and should be read as one.
On a domestic one, in fact. The two best-paying listings in the sample both said nacional, and the highest of all carried that word in its title. International work paying best is an assumption, not a finding, in this district. If your vacancy is domestic trunking, you don’t need to apologise for it in the advert, and you have no reason to discount the pay as though there were.
Read that figure carefully. Unemployment benefit recipients here make up the highest share of the population of any northern sub-region, but that is recipiency measured against resident population rather than an unemployment rate. Trás-os-Montes scores lowest on the same measure and has the emptiest labour market in the north. Low recipiency inland means people have left, not that work is plentiful.
More than it does anywhere else in the north. This metropolitan area recorded close to nine million overnight stays, with bed occupancy above half, compared with roughly a third in the Minho. Accommodation and hospitality bid for the same licence holders who do delivery and shuttle work, and they bid on shift patterns rather than on pay. Factor that into what you offer on nights and weekends.
Some, and less than its passenger figures suggest. The airport spans Maia, Matosinhos, and Vila do Conde; it handled close to a quarter of all Portuguese airport passengers, and UPS Airlines is the only named cargo operator we we found, flying to Cologne, butbut we couldn’t obtain No cargo tonnage for after across four attempts, and do not build a vacancy around a volume nobody will tell you.
It changes the vehicle, and the vehicle changes the driver. Articulated combinations and road trains on five axles or more are allowed forty-four tonnes rather than the forty the cross-border figure assumes, and a modular regime runs to sixty tonnes and just over twenty-five metres. Semi-trailers carrying forty-five foot boxes get a little extra length. A domestic payload therefore beats the international one, and a driver who has only ever run at forty needs telling.
In practice you do, because some Portuguese motorways have no booths at all. The former shadow-toll roads charge by plate or transponder, with no roadside cash option, so a vehicle without one creates a liability the operator settles afterwards. Heavy vehicles sit in the upper toll bands: three axles, or over three and a half tonnes in one, and four or more axles in the highest. That is why Portuguese fleets run Via Verde across the board.
Two hard limits sit in front of that file, whatever the category. The exchange is barred if more than fifteen years have passed since the foreign licence was issued or last revalidated, or if the holder is sixty or over. Both apply to the Portuguese-speaking and OECD group, which is otherwise the easiest group to exchange from. Check the issue date and the age before making the offer, not after.
About a third again on top, split between the two of you. The general contribution is just under 24 per cent from the employer and 11 per cent from the worker, nearly 35 per cent in all, with no different rate for a fixed-term contract under that regime. You also need workplace accident insurance in place, with the policy number and insurer written in the file beside the admission report.
Drivers in this district have adverts to compare yours against, most of them from agencies. Name the company, name the municipality, say what the vehicle is, and let the applications come straight to you.
