Coach and bus work needs permis D plus the voyageurs branch of the qualification. With around 34 million visitors a year and more than 80 per cent of employment in services, coastal operators recruit conducteurs de car for scheduled and tourism services and conducteurs receveurs on urban fare-handling routes.
Fos adverts lead on the specialism, ADR, citerne, frigo or double equipage, and drivers read that before the employer name. An advert that omits it reads as generic and competes badly in a market where the specialisms carry the pay.
Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur is compact by French standards, 31,400 km2 across six departements, but it splits between a dense coastal strip and the Alpine interior of the Hautes-Alpes and the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Most of the driver work sits on the coastal side.
The Bouches-du-Rhone carries the industrial and logistics weight: Fos and its container terminal, the Clesud platform at Grans-Miramas, Distriport beside the terminal with its own rail access, and Alphapark at Gignac-la-Nerthe near Marignane.

French drivers search in French. An advert written only in English will miss most of the domestic market.
Two letters carry most of the meaning. PL means a rigid lorry and maps to permis C. SPL means an articulated combination and maps to permis CE. Using them the wrong way round marks an advert as written by someone outside the trade, and drivers notice.
The common advert titles are chauffeur routier, chauffeur SPL, chauffeur PL, conducteur SPL and conducteur routier for freight, chauffeur livreur for delivery work, and conducteur de car for coach work.
Conducteur receveur is worth knowing. It means a bus driver who also handles fares and passenger contact, and it is the standard title on urban network vacancies.
Write the licence as permis C or permis CE. Adverts also use the older EC form, so either is understood, and the category usually appears in the advert title rather than buried in the body.
FIMO is the initial qualification and FCO the periodic refresher. Adverts list them by name alongside the carte de qualification de conducteur and code 95. Name only what the role genuinely needs.
The carte de conducteur for the digital tachograph appears in most freight adverts, and ADR where the load requires it.
One term is regularly misunderstood. CACES is an assessment scheme, not a licence. The legal permission to operate a forklift is the employer's own autorisation de conduite, and the CACES supports it rather than replacing it.
Pay is referenced against the convention collective nationale des transports routiers and its coefficient system. Stating a coefficient, or a clear gross figure, does more for an advert than a vague range.

For a candidate from outside the EU, the employer applies for the autorisation de travail through the ANEF portal. The application is the employer's to make, not the candidate's, and silence from the administration counts as a refusal rather than an approval, so track it rather than waiting.
Pay must reach at least the SMIC or the higher rate set by the convention collective nationale des transports routiers, whichever is greater. For driver roles the collective agreement is usually the binding figure, so check the coefficient for the post before you advertise a salary.
Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur is the only metropolitan French region where the conducteurs routiers occupation, code J3Z43, appears on the shortage occupation list. That list is set by arrêté, with a separate annexe for each region, and the practical effect here is that an employer recruiting a lorry driver from outside the EU is exempt from the labour market test: there is no need to show that the vacancy was published with the public employment service for three consecutive weeks within the preceding six months. Everywhere else in metropolitan France that publication test still applies in full. Three cautions belong alongside this. The exemption covers long-distance goods driving, not coach or bus driving, which carries no exemption in any region. The same regional annexe separately lists construction plant and agricultural machinery operators, which are different occupations and must not be read across to lorry work. And the arrêtés are revised periodically, so an employer should confirm that the entry is still in force before relying on it. Nothing else changes: the employer still applies through the ANEF portal, the pay must still meet the SMIC or the higher convention collective rate, and two months of silence still counts as a refusal.
Employers in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur may receive applications from drivers based in France, elsewhere in the EU and EEA, Switzerland, the wider European region, Asia, Africa, Gulf countries, North America, Latin America and other eligible international markets.
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens may work in France without a work authorisation. Licence validity and the professional qualification still apply to them exactly as they do to a French driver.
Where a French operator employs a driver who is a third country national, an attestation de conducteur is also required. It is issued by the DREAL, or the DRIEAT in the Paris region, and it is separate from the work authorisation.
A candidate's ability to work here depends on nationality, residence status, professional qualifications, driving licence validity and the requirements of the individual position. Name the licence category in the advert. A French driver reads it first, and PL or SPL in the title tells them immediately whether the job is theirs.
Freight work uses permis C for rigid vehicles and permis CE for combinations, with C1 and C1E for lighter rigids. Passenger transport uses D and D1. Delivery roles in light vehicles sit in category B.
Age limits matter when planning a pipeline. C1 and C1E open at eighteen, C and CE at twenty one, D1 and D1E at twenty one and D and DE at twenty four. C and CE drop to eighteen for a driver holding the initial qualification.
Heavy category validity is tied to age rather than a fixed term, and every renewal requires a medical examination by an approved doctor. The interval shortens as the driver gets older, which is worth knowing before you build a rota around one person.
FIMO is the initial qualification, one hundred and forty hours, with a longer initial route of two hundred and eighty. FCO is thirty five hours every five years. Both are evidenced by the carte de qualification de conducteur and by code 95.
The passerelle between goods and passenger work runs thirty five hours in either direction, but read it carefully before you plan around it. It converts the qualification, not the licence. A driver moving to coach work must already hold the passenger category, so it widens your field only among drivers who already hold both.
Foreign licences need care. An EU or EEA licence is valid in France. Outside that, exchange depends on a reciprocity agreement with the issuing country, and the agreements differ in scope: some cover all categories, many cover only cars and motorcycles. A heavy category can only be exchanged where the agreement covers it, and the exchange must be started within a year of the driver establishing residence. Check the country before you make an offer, not after.
A professional qualification obtained outside the EU or EEA is not recognised in France. An experienced driver arriving from outside Europe must take FIMO here, whatever they held before. Budget realistic time for that rather than discovering it after a contract is signed.
A carte de conducteur is required for the digital tachograph on in scope work, and ADR training where the load needs it. Say which of these the role actually needs, and remember that verifying the original documents remains the employer's responsibility.

The list is revised periodically, so confirm the entry is still in force before you rely on it.

The employer files it online through the Interior Ministry's ANEF portal; there is no counter application. A permanent contract leads to the carte de séjour salarié, which becomes a multi-year card on renewal where employment continues, and a fixed-term contract to travailleur temporaire. No official processing standard is published, so no one can honestly give several weeks. The one fixed rule is that two months of silence counts as a refusal.
At least the SMIC, or the higher rate set by the convention collective nationale des transports routiers where that applies, whichever is greater. In road transport, the collective agreement limb usually binds because the grade minima sit above the SMIC. Drivers in this market also compare the frais de route and the premiums attached to ADR and tanker work, so put those in the advert.
Permis C for rigid lorries, permis CE for articulated combinations, permis D and DE for coaches and buses, with C1, C1E, D1 and D1E for the smaller categories. Baseline ages are eighteen for C1 and C1E, twenty-one for C, CE, D1 and D1E, and twenty-four for D. A driver holding the initial professional qualification can hold C and CE from eighteen.
More often than most employers expect. Heavy categories carry no fixed administrative term like the car licence: validity is tied to thedriver’ss age, with a medical examination by an approved doctor at every renewal, and the interval shortens as the driver gets older. A compliance process that checks the licence once at hire will eventually put a driver with an expired category on the road, so build a recurring check into the diary.
FIMO is the initial professional qualification, at least 140 hours, or 280 hours through the longer diploma and professional title route. FCO is the 35-hour periodic refresher, due every five years, and driving professionally becomes unlawful the day it lapses. The carte de qualification de conducteur proves the qualification and it also appears on the licence as code 95. It is a different card from the tachograph driver card, and driversconstantly confuse the two.
Rarely without extra steps. Heavy categories can be exchanged only where the issuing country appears on the interior ministry’s reciprocity list marked Toutes, and the exchange must be started within a year of the driver establishing residence in France. Where the country is marked A et B or B, or is not listed, the driver must sit the French heavy licence exam. The professional qualification is not recognised from outside the EU or EEA.

Container pre-haulage and post-haulage runs operate under a regional 44-tonne authorisation that general road transport does not have, and they sit alongside combined rail and road services rather than competing only with other lorries. Dangerous goods handling, bonded storage and customs documentation are part of the working day. Say in the advert whether the role is container work, tanker work or industrial haulage, because they are not interchangeable.
Two agglomerations operate them on different terms. Aix-Marseille-Provence restricts unclassified vehicles and Crit’Air 5 and Crit’Air 4 around the clock across all categories. Nice is the stricter one for commercial vehicles: lorries and buses are restricted at Crit’Air 4, Crit’Air 5 and unclassified, a tighter threshold than the one applied to cars in the same zone. The national framework is under review ,and no position is settled, so confirm each scheme directly.
It is further along here than in most French regions. The port has LNG refuelling and Europe’s first hydrogen refuelling station for long-haul lorries, and quay electrification capacity has been increased. None of that removes a vehicle restriction by itself, but an employer planning gas or hydrogen tractors is not starting from nothing, and it is worth naming in an advert if the fleet is part of that shift.
By naming the base and the corridor. A Fos or Istres job, an Avignon job and a Nice job are three different commutes and three different markets, even though the region is compact. State the depot commune, whether the run is the A7 north, the A8 east along the coast or local distribution, and whether the driver is home nightly. The coastal strip and the Alpine interior are very different for driving.
The whole of the hire. Selection, interview, contract, induction, and the declaration préalable àl’embauchee to Urssaf are yours. For a candidate who is not an EU, EEA, or Swiss national,, you must ask the prefectureatf the place of employment to verify the residence document at least two working days before the start, and keep the dated request as evidence.
