On the freight side the island refines, which makes tanker work a bigger and more cyclical slice of the road task than elsewhere.

Martinique is a compact import-led freight market with an unusually fragmented passenger sector. Around seventy per cent of port volume is inbound, chiefly petroleum and containerised goods, while bananas move outward in boxes, and the island refines its own fuel.

Martinique employers recruit conducteurs receveurs and chauffeurs de bus for the urban routes, conducteurs de car for interurban and school services, and heavy goods drivers for fuel, container and bulk work out of the port.
Permis D driving on the urban routes of the Reseau Centre, which serves Fort-de-France, Schoelcher, Le Lamentin and Saint-Joseph. The receveur element is fare sale and ticket checking alongside driving, so the advert should say whether the role carries it rather than leaving it implied.
The guided busway between Fort-de-France and Le Lamentin runs 13.9 km with 18 stations, worked by bi-articulated hybrid vehicles 24 metres long from a dedicated maintenance facility at Le Lamentin. It is driven by a small trained cohort, so recruitment into it is training-led rather than volume-led.
Interurban and school coach work on permis D, run through the Nord and Sud networks under the territory's single mobility authority. School services are a standing segment of French coach employment, and term-time hours and split shifts belong in the advert rather than in the interview.
Fuel distribution on permis C or CE with ADR. Because Martinique refines, crude arrives at the hydrocarbon berth and refined product then moves by road, and a scheduled maintenance shutdown has cut crude imports by more than a third in a year, so tanker rostering here is genuinely cyclical.
Container and bulk haulage on permis C or CE from the terminal at Pointe des Grives, from the ro-ro and break-bulk quays, and from the newer dock at Reynoird near Le Robert. Some movements are legs of a two-island journey, because a ro-ro service links the island to Guadeloupe.
Passenger adverts here need the operator's name, the depot and the hours. With one public operator and seven private ones running urban routes in a single agglomeration, a candidate cannot work out from the network name alone who would actually be employing them.
Martinique is a single collectivite territoriale, small enough that a driver can live on one side and work on the other, and it is the only one of the five overseas regions confirmed to have a stretch of motorway. The commute question is therefore about traffic, not distance.
Fort-de-France is the prefecture and the port city. The container terminal at Pointe des Grives, the cruise berths at Les Tourelles and the Pointe Simon terminal all sit here, as does the harbour, so most freight movements begin within the agglomeration.
The N5 has been substantially upgraded and the section from Fort-de-France to the international airport carries motorway status. Le Lamentin holds the airport, the busway depot and a large part of the industrial activity, which makes it the second centre of gravity.
Schoelcher and Saint-Joseph complete the central network area, while Le Robert on the Atlantic side carries the Reynoird dock and La Trinite a second harbour. The island has no commercial railway, so everything inland moves by road.

French drivers search in French. An advert written only in English will miss most of the domestic market.
Two letters carry most of the meaning. PL means a rigid lorry and maps to permis C. SPL means an articulated combination and maps to permis CE. Using them the wrong way round marks an advert as written by someone outside the trade, and drivers notice.
The common advert titles are chauffeur routier, chauffeur SPL, chauffeur PL, conducteur SPL and conducteur routier for freight, chauffeur livreur for delivery work, and conducteur de car for coach work.
Conducteur receveur is worth knowing. It means a bus driver who also handles fares and passenger contact, and it is the standard title on urban network vacancies.
Write the licence as permis C or permis CE. Adverts also use the older EC form, so either is understood, and the category usually appears in the advert title rather than buried in the body.
FIMO is the initial qualification and FCO the periodic refresher. Adverts list them by name alongside the carte de qualification de conducteur and code 95. Name only what the role genuinely needs.
The carte de conducteur for the digital tachograph appears in most freight adverts, and ADR where the load requires it.
One term is regularly misunderstood. CACES is an assessment scheme, not a licence. The legal permission to operate a forklift is the employer's own autorisation de conduite, and the CACES supports it rather than replacing it.
Pay is referenced against the convention collective nationale des transports routiers and its coefficient system. Stating a coefficient, or a clear gross figure, does more for an advert than a vague range.
One naming trap is worth knowing before an advert goes out. Mozaik, the brand most people on the island still use for the central bus network, formally ceased and was replaced by the Reseau Centre under the territory's single mobility authority. An advert that describes itself as recruiting for the Mozaik network is describing something that no longer exists as an operating structure, which reads badly to a candidate who works in the sector. Name the operator, the network as it is now, and the depot.

For a candidate from outside the EU, the employer applies for the autorisation de travail through the ANEF portal. The application is the employer's to make, not the candidate's, and silence from the administration counts as a refusal rather than an approval, so track it rather than waiting.
Pay must reach at least the SMIC or the higher rate set by the convention collective nationale des transports routiers, whichever is greater. For driver roles the collective agreement is usually the binding figure, so check the coefficient for the post before you advertise a salary.
An employer used to metropolitan hiring should start from this: Martinique is outside the Schengen area. The Schengen acquis reaches only the European territory of France, so a Schengen visa admits nobody here, and a visa issued for Martinique admits nobody to mainland France or to another Schengen state. Entry documents are set by an arrêté that covers Martinique together with Guadeloupe, Guyane and La Réunion, and a third country national needs a visa issued for this territory unless their nationality is waived for it by that text.
Authorisation to work is territorial in exactly the same way, and this is where hires go wrong. A permit granted for metropolitan France carries no right to work in Martinique, so a driver already employed lawfully on the mainland cannot simply be moved across: the employer makes a fresh application, judged here. A Martinique permit is equally invalid in mainland France. The narrow exceptions are the carte de sejour vie privee et familiale and the carte de resident, where registering the change of address is enough, and certain residence cards issued in an overseas department are restricted to that place outright. The rule is set out at service-public.gouv.fr.
Martinique has its own metiers en tension arrêté as well, distinct from the metropolitan list, and only that text can lift the requirement to publish the vacancy for three weeks first. Secondary summaries put the Martinique list at around twenty-five occupations and name none of them as driving work, but none of those summaries reproduced the list in full, so the arrêté itself has to be read rather than assumed either way.
Employers in Martinique may receive applications from drivers based in France, elsewhere in the EU and EEA, Switzerland, the wider European region, Asia, Africa, Gulf countries, North America, Latin America and other eligible international markets.
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens may work in France without a work authorisation. Licence validity and the professional qualification still apply to them exactly as they do to a French driver.
Where a French operator employs a driver who is a third country national, an attestation de conducteur is also required. It is issued by the DREAL, or the DRIEAT in the Paris region, and it is separate from the work authorisation.
A candidate's ability to work here depends on nationality, residence status, professional qualifications, driving licence validity and the requirements of the individual position. Name the licence category in the advert. A French driver reads it first, and PL or SPL in the title tells them immediately whether the job is theirs.
Freight work uses permis C for rigid vehicles and permis CE for combinations, with C1 and C1E for lighter rigids. Passenger transport uses D and D1. Delivery roles in light vehicles sit in category B.
Age limits matter when planning a pipeline. C1 and C1E open at eighteen, C and CE at twenty one, D1 and D1E at twenty one and D and DE at twenty four. C and CE drop to eighteen for a driver holding the initial qualification.
Heavy category validity is tied to age rather than a fixed term, and every renewal requires a medical examination by an approved doctor. The interval shortens as the driver gets older, which is worth knowing before you build a rota around one person.
FIMO is the initial qualification, one hundred and forty hours, with a longer initial route of two hundred and eighty. FCO is thirty five hours every five years. Both are evidenced by the carte de qualification de conducteur and by code 95.
The passerelle between goods and passenger work runs thirty five hours in either direction, but read it carefully before you plan around it. It converts the qualification, not the licence. A driver moving to coach work must already hold the passenger category, so it widens your field only among drivers who already hold both.
Foreign licences need care. An EU or EEA licence is valid in France. Outside that, exchange depends on a reciprocity agreement with the issuing country, and the agreements differ in scope: some cover all categories, many cover only cars and motorcycles. A heavy category can only be exchanged where the agreement covers it, and the exchange must be started within a year of the driver establishing residence. Check the country before you make an offer, not after.
A professional qualification obtained outside the EU or EEA is not recognised in France. An experienced driver arriving from outside Europe must take FIMO here, whatever they held before. Budget realistic time for that rather than discovering it after a contract is signed.
A carte de conducteur is required for the digital tachograph on in scope work, and ADR training where the load needs it. Say which of these the role actually needs, and remember that verifying the original documents remains the employer's responsibility.

The distinction is worth stating plainly in France, where agency hiring is a large part of how driver vacancies are filled, because the two models carry very different obligations.
Not on the strength of the permit they hold. Work authorisation in France is granted for a territory, so a mainland permit authorises mainland work only, and recruiting that driver here means a fresh application decided in Martinique. The reverse is true as well. Holders of a vie privee et familiale card or a resident card are the main exception and register a change of address instead.

Unemployment is around thirteen per cent, well above the metropolitan rate but the lowest overseas; the employment rate for fifteen- to sixty-four-year-olds is about sixty-one per cent, and senior employment matches metropolitan levels. Against that, the population is falling on out-migration and youth unemployment runs near a third, so the medium-term pipeline is weak.
Name the operating company, the network as it is currently constituted, the depot and the shift pattern, and say whether fare handling forms part of the role, because conducteur receveur and chauffeur de bus are not the same job description. Avoid the old network brand that locals still use in conversation: it formally ceased,d and an advert built on it reads asif written from outside the sector.

The passerelle runs thirty-five hours in each direction and converts the professional qualification, not the licence itself. A goods driver moving to coach work must already hold permis D; the passerelle does not provide it. Employers frequently overstate this in adverts and then lose candidates at the checking stage, so describe the qualification route and the licence requirement as two separate things.
The employer applies for the autorisation de travail through the ANEF portal, not the candidate, and pay must be at least the SMIC or the higher figure set by the convention collective nationale des transports routiers, whichever is greater. If the prefecture says nothing for two months, that counts as a refusal. Nobody can promise approval, and FastDriver.eu makes no government decisions at any stage.
EU and EEA licences are valid as issued. Beyond that, exchange follows a reciprocity list; heavy categories can only be exchanged from a country marked Toutes, and the exchange must start within a year of establishing residence. A professional qualification obtained outside the EU or EEA is not recognised in France, so the driver sits FIMO afresh. Plan the start date around that rather than around the interview.
No responsible answer contains several weeks. France publishes no processing standard for the autorisation de travail, and the only fixed rule is that two months of prefecture silence counts as a refusal that can be appealed. If the candidate needs the licence, the qualification, or a busway training place, add that period on top and build it into the offer.
It applies to state employees only. The twenty-five per cent majoration and the fifteen per cent temporary allowance are public service pay rules and do not apply to private haulage or private bus operators, and suggesting otherwise in an advert would mislead. They do raise what candidates treat as a competitive offer, so benchmark against the convention collective and its coefficients, and against a local cost of living well above metropolitan levels.

Verify the residence document with the prefecture at the place of employment before the start date, file the DPAE, apply for any work authorisation, arrange the carte de conducteur for the digital tachograph, and obtain the attestation de conducteur where a third-country national drives for your operation.
