Rigid work on permis C, running containerised food and consumer goods out of Jarry to the retail network across Baie-Mahault, Les Abymes and Le Lamentin. Short legs, many drops, and a driver who is expected to be present at the unload rather than waiting in the cab.
Articulated work on permis CE, advertised locally as chauffeur SPL. It covers container movements off the terminal, construction materials and the longer runs between Grande-Terre and Basse-Terre across the Riviere Salee crossing, where the mountain roads on the Basse-Terre side turn sharply.
Delivery rounds where the loading certificate matters as much as the licence. CACES R489 for counterbalance forklifts and CACES R485 for pedestrian-operated stackers appear constantly in local adverts. Remember the CACES evidences competence: the permission to operate is the autorisation de conduite you issue.
Permis D work on the Karulis network, operated by STAC for the Syndicat mixte des transports du Petit Cul-de-Sac Marin across Cap Excellence and the Riviera du Levant. Conducteur receveur means the driver also handles fares, which is a different job description from a depot-to-depot shuttle.
Coach work on permis D, including school runs, which is a standing segment of passenger driving in France and appears among the named bus operators advertising here, including TVR, Navy Transcolaire and Tropic Transports. Term-time hours and split shifts should be stated in the advert, not discovered at interview.
Be exact about the loading duty. A Guadeloupe advert that asks for a CACES without saying which class, or that hides a full day of forklift work behind a driving title, will lose the candidates who could actually do the job.
Guadeloupe is an archipelago of a little over 1,600 square kilometres, and a driver judging a commute needs the commune, not the region. The administrative capital and the economic capital are not the same place and sit roughly 60 km apart by road.
Basse-Terre is the prefecture and a small town. The port, the airport and the main industrial zone all sit in the Pointe-a-Pitre agglomeration, which is where Les Abymes and Baie-Mahault carry the largest populations on the archipelago.
Jarry, inside the commune of Baie-Mahault, is the principal industrial and port zone and the origin of most road freight. Approved driver training centres and a large share of the advertised vacancies sit there or in the neighbouring communes.
The two main islands are joined by the N1 and N11 across the Riviere Salee. The Basse-Terre side is mountainous, with notably sharp turns and La Grande Soufriere rising to 1,467 metres, so a run that looks short on a map is not necessarily quick.
Driver adverts also appear well outside the port belt, at Le Moule, Capesterre-Belle-Eau, Trois-Rivieres, Bouillante and Baillif, and Marie-Galante carries its own inter-island and sugar traffic through Folle Anse.

French drivers search in French. An advert written only in English will miss most of the domestic market.
Two letters carry most of the meaning. PL means a rigid lorry and maps to permis C. SPL means an articulated combination and maps to permis CE. Using them the wrong way round marks an advert as written by someone outside the trade, and drivers notice.
The common advert titles are chauffeur routier, chauffeur SPL, chauffeur PL, conducteur SPL and conducteur routier for freight, chauffeur livreur for delivery work, and conducteur de car for coach work.
Conducteur receveur is worth knowing. It means a bus driver who also handles fares and passenger contact, and it is the standard title on urban network vacancies.
Write the licence as permis C or permis CE. Adverts also use the older EC form, so either is understood, and the category usually appears in the advert title rather than buried in the body.
FIMO is the initial qualification and FCO the periodic refresher. Adverts list them by name alongside the carte de qualification de conducteur and code 95. Name only what the role genuinely needs.
The carte de conducteur for the digital tachograph appears in most freight adverts, and ADR where the load requires it.
One term is regularly misunderstood. CACES is an assessment scheme, not a licence. The legal permission to operate a forklift is the employer's own autorisation de conduite, and the CACES supports it rather than replacing it.
Pay is referenced against the convention collective nationale des transports routiers and its coefficient system. Stating a coefficient, or a clear gross figure, does more for an advert than a vague range.
Guadeloupe adverts spell super poids lourd out in full at least as often as they write SPL, and they pair the driving licence with a handling certificate far more readily than metropolitan adverts do: CACES R489 and CACES R485 appear repeatedly, and at least one local advert treats the forklift certificate as compulsory alongside the heavy goods licence. Write the advert accordingly, using chauffeur poids lourd and chauffeur super poids lourd rather than the bare category letters, and naming the CACES class you actually need.

For a candidate from outside the EU, the employer applies for the autorisation de travail through the ANEF portal. The application is the employer's to make, not the candidate's, and silence from the administration counts as a refusal rather than an approval, so track it rather than waiting.
Pay must reach at least the SMIC or the higher rate set by the convention collective nationale des transports routiers, whichever is greater. For driver roles the collective agreement is usually the binding figure, so check the coefficient for the post before you advertise a salary.
The Schengen acquis applies only to the European territory of France, so entry documents here are territorial. A Schengen visa does not admit anyone to Guadeloupe, and a visa issued for Guadeloupe does not admit anyone to metropolitan France or to any other Schengen state. Guadeloupe sits with Guyane, Martinique and La Réunion under a single entry arrêté, and a third country national needs a visa issued for the territory unless their nationality is waived for it by that text.
Work authorisation is territorial in the same way. A permit issued for metropolitan France does not authorise work in Guadeloupe, and a fresh application must be made; a permit issued in Guadeloupe does not authorise work in mainland France either. Do not assume a driver already working lawfully in France can simply relocate and start. The narrow exceptions are holders of a carte de sejour vie privee et familiale or of a carte de resident, for whom registering the change of address is enough, and note that some residence cards issued overseas are restricted to the issuing territory. Guadeloupe also has its own metiers en tension arrêté, separate from the metropolitan list, which is what decides whether the three week publication test is waived for a given occupation. Published summaries put the Guadeloupe list at around sixteen occupations and name none of them as driving work, but neither summary reproduced the list in full. Read the arrêté itself before assuming an exemption applies.
Employers in Guadeloupe may receive applications from drivers based in France, elsewhere in the EU and EEA, Switzerland, the wider European region, Asia, Africa, Gulf countries, North America, Latin America and other eligible international markets.
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens may work in France without a work authorisation. Licence validity and the professional qualification still apply to them exactly as they do to a French driver.
Where a French operator employs a driver who is a third country national, an attestation de conducteur is also required. It is issued by the DREAL, or the DRIEAT in the Paris region, and it is separate from the work authorisation.
A candidate's ability to work here depends on nationality, residence status, professional qualifications, driving licence validity and the requirements of the individual position. Name the licence category in the advert. A French driver reads it first, and PL or SPL in the title tells them immediately whether the job is theirs.
Freight work uses permis C for rigid vehicles and permis CE for combinations, with C1 and C1E for lighter rigids. Passenger transport uses D and D1. Delivery roles in light vehicles sit in category B.
Age limits matter when planning a pipeline. C1 and C1E open at eighteen, C and CE at twenty one, D1 and D1E at twenty one and D and DE at twenty four. C and CE drop to eighteen for a driver holding the initial qualification.
Heavy category validity is tied to age rather than a fixed term, and every renewal requires a medical examination by an approved doctor. The interval shortens as the driver gets older, which is worth knowing before you build a rota around one person.
FIMO is the initial qualification, one hundred and forty hours, with a longer initial route of two hundred and eighty. FCO is thirty five hours every five years. Both are evidenced by the carte de qualification de conducteur and by code 95.
The passerelle between goods and passenger work runs thirty five hours in either direction, but read it carefully before you plan around it. It converts the qualification, not the licence. A driver moving to coach work must already hold the passenger category, so it widens your field only among drivers who already hold both.
Foreign licences need care. An EU or EEA licence is valid in France. Outside that, exchange depends on a reciprocity agreement with the issuing country, and the agreements differ in scope: some cover all categories, many cover only cars and motorcycles. A heavy category can only be exchanged where the agreement covers it, and the exchange must be started within a year of the driver establishing residence. Check the country before you make an offer, not after.
A professional qualification obtained outside the EU or EEA is not recognised in France. An experienced driver arriving from outside Europe must take FIMO here, whatever they held before. Budget realistic time for that rather than discovering it after a contract is signed.
A carte de conducteur is required for the digital tachograph on in scope work, and ADR training where the load needs it. Say which of these the role actually needs, and remember that verifying the original documents remains the employer's responsibility.

It is not. Work authorisation in France is issued for a territory, and one granted for metropolitan France authorises work there only. Youth unemployment is near a third. People are available, but many will need the licence and professional qualification funded rather than simply a job offer.
A permanent one. On local aggregators, roughly four in five advertised heavy goods roles are agency assignments, with fixed-term and permanent contracts sharing the remainder. An employer offering a CDI is offering something the market largely does not, and putting that in the advert title rather than burying it in the body changes the response. Pay alone is rarely the only lever here.

EU, EEA, and Swiss nationals need no work permit or residence permit; only an identity document is required for the nationality check. People under temporary protection from Ukraine hold a provisional residence authorisation that carries the right to work, so no separate work permit is needed, but the document and its validity must be checked and re-checked at renewal. Entry to Guadeloupe still follows the territorial visa rules.
There is no published processing standard for a work authorisation, so no one can give you a fixed timeline. The only fixed rule is that prefecture silence for two months counts as a refusal and opens an appeal. Where the candidate still needs the licence or the FIMO, add the training time, and if an RSMA intake is involved, note that its cycle runs annually rather than rolling.
EU and EEA licences are valid as they stand. Outside that, exchange runs on a reciprocity list, and heavy categories can only be exchanged from a country marked Toutes, with the exchange started within a year of establishing residence. France does not recognise professional qualifications obtained outside the EU or EEA, so the driver must take the FIMO again. Build that into the timeline before advertising a start date.
It does not. The twenty-five per cent majoration and the fifteen per cent temporary allowance are public service pay rules for state employees, not a private-sector entitlement, and implying otherwise in an advert would be misleading. It shapes what candidates regard as a competitive offer and makes public sector driving roles comparatively attractive—Benchmark instead against the convention collective and its coefficients.
Everything that makes a hire lawful. Verifying the residence document with the prefecture at the place of employment before the start date, filing the DPAE, applying for any work authorisation, issuing the autorisation de conduite for handling equipment, arranging the carte de conducteur and, where a third-country national drives for a French operator, the attestation de conducteur.
