Rhone adverts pair SPL with a loader crane or a flatbed body for construction and industrial loads. The crane assessment evidences competence; the legal permission to operate it is the autorisation de conduite that you issue as the employer, not the assessment card itself.
Passenger roles run on permis D with the voyageurs qualification. Conducteur de car covers scheduled and school services across Savoie, Haute-Savoie and Isere, while conducteur receveur means an urban driver who also sells and checks tickets. Both need FIMO and a current FCO voyageurs.
Rhone adverts lean almost entirely on SPL wording, which filters out permis C holders before they reach the detail. If the vehicle is a rigid, head the advert chauffeur PL and say permis C, and keep SPL for articulated work.
Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes covers twelve departements, from the Allier and the Puy-de-Dome in the west to the Savoie and Haute-Savoie border with Switzerland and Italy. Lyon sits at the hinge, and a driver's daily reality depends heavily on which side of the region the depot is on.
The Lyon axis is the busiest. Saint-Quentin-Fallavier in the Isere and Saint-Vulbas in the Ain are the two logistics zones of national importance, both within easy reach of the A43, A46 and A7, with Villefranche-sur-Saone and Montelimar on the Paris to Marseille road.
East of Chambery the work turns Alpine. The A43 climbs to the Frejus tunnel at Modane and crosses to Bardonecchia in Piedmont, and Mont Blanc offers the second road crossing. Both run to published maintenance calendars and keep working through them.
Auvergne is a different market. Clermont-Ferrand, Michelin, cheese and livestock collection and the A89 towards Bordeaux give shorter, more rural rounds than the Rhone corridor, with Saint-Etienne and the Loire sitting between the two.

French drivers search in French. An advert written only in English will miss most of the domestic market.
Two letters carry most of the meaning. PL means a rigid lorry and maps to permis C. SPL means an articulated combination and maps to permis CE. Using them the wrong way round marks an advert as written by someone outside the trade, and drivers notice.
The common advert titles are chauffeur routier, chauffeur SPL, chauffeur PL, conducteur SPL and conducteur routier for freight, chauffeur livreur for delivery work, and conducteur de car for coach work.
Conducteur receveur is worth knowing. It means a bus driver who also handles fares and passenger contact, and it is the standard title on urban network vacancies.
Write the licence as permis C or permis CE. Adverts also use the older EC form, so either is understood, and the category usually appears in the advert title rather than buried in the body.
FIMO is the initial qualification and FCO the periodic refresher. Adverts list them by name alongside the carte de qualification de conducteur and code 95. Name only what the role genuinely needs.
The carte de conducteur for the digital tachograph appears in most freight adverts, and ADR where the load requires it.
One term is regularly misunderstood. CACES is an assessment scheme, not a licence. The legal permission to operate a forklift is the employer's own autorisation de conduite, and the CACES supports it rather than replacing it.
Pay is referenced against the convention collective nationale des transports routiers and its coefficient system. Stating a coefficient, or a clear gross figure, does more for an advert than a vague range.

For a candidate from outside the EU, the employer applies for the autorisation de travail through the ANEF portal. The application is the employer's to make, not the candidate's, and silence from the administration counts as a refusal rather than an approval, so track it rather than waiting.
Pay must reach at least the SMIC or the higher rate set by the convention collective nationale des transports routiers, whichever is greater. For driver roles the collective agreement is usually the binding figure, so check the coefficient for the post before you advertise a salary.
Unless an exemption applies, the employer must have published the vacancy for three weeks within the preceding six months before applying. The main exemption is the shortage occupation list, which is set by arrêté and is regional, so the list that matters is the annexe for this region rather than a national one.

EU, EEA and Swiss citizens may work in France without a work authorisation. Licence validity and the professional qualification still apply to them exactly as they do to a French driver.
Where a French operator employs a driver who is a third country national, an attestation de conducteur is also required. It is issued by the DREAL, or the DRIEAT in the Paris region, and it is separate from the work authorisation.
A candidate's ability to work here depends on nationality, residence status, professional qualifications, driving licence validity and the requirements of the individual position. Name the licence category in the advert. A French driver reads it first, and PL or SPL in the title tells them immediately whether the job is theirs.
Freight work uses permis C for rigid vehicles and permis CE for combinations, with C1 and C1E for lighter rigids. Passenger transport uses D and D1. Delivery roles in light vehicles sit in category B.
Age limits matter when planning a pipeline. C1 and C1E open at eighteen, C and CE at twenty one, D1 and D1E at twenty one and D and DE at twenty four. C and CE drop to eighteen for a driver holding the initial qualification.
Heavy category validity is tied to age rather than a fixed term, and every renewal requires a medical examination by an approved doctor. The interval shortens as the driver gets older, which is worth knowing before you build a rota around one person.
FIMO is the initial qualification, one hundred and forty hours, with a longer initial route of two hundred and eighty. FCO is thirty five hours every five years. Both are evidenced by the carte de qualification de conducteur and by code 95.
The passerelle between goods and passenger work runs thirty five hours in either direction, but read it carefully before you plan around it. It converts the qualification, not the licence. A driver moving to coach work must already hold the passenger category, so it widens your field only among drivers who already hold both.
Foreign licences need care. An EU or EEA licence is valid in France. Outside that, exchange depends on a reciprocity agreement with the issuing country, and the agreements differ in scope: some cover all categories, many cover only cars and motorcycles. A heavy category can only be exchanged where the agreement covers it, and the exchange must be started within a year of the driver establishing residence. Check the country before you make an offer, not after.
A professional qualification obtained outside the EU or EEA is not recognised in France. An experienced driver arriving from outside Europe must take FIMO here, whatever they held before. Budget realistic time for that rather than discovering it after a contract is signed.
A carte de conducteur is required for the digital tachograph on in scope work, and ADR training where the load needs it. Say which of these the role actually needs, and remember that verifying the original documents remains the employer's responsibility.

Anyone with the right to work in France and the licence and qualification your advert requires. French nationals and nationals of the EU, the EEA, and Switzerland need no permit or residence document to take the job. A candidate outside that group needs a residence document that authorises salaried work; if they don't have one, you, as the employer, make the work authorisation application.
The employer applies. The employer submits the application online through the interior ministry’s ANEF portal; paper filing at a prefecture counter no longer exists. The acknowledgement email you receive on submission does not allow the person to start work. If the prefecture has not replied after two months, that silence counts as a refusal and opens the way to an administrative appeal.
It does not. The list is set by arrêté and drawn up region by region, and the conducteurs routiers occupation does not appear in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes annexe. An employer here recruiting a lorry driver from outside the EU must show the vacancy was published with the public employment service for three consecutive weeks within the preceding six months. Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur is currently the one metropolitan region where that test falls away for this occupation, and the lists are revised periodically.
At least the SMIC, or the higher figure set by the convention collective nationale des transports routiers, whichever is greater. For drivers, the collective agreement limb is usually operative, because the sector’s grade minima sit above the SMIC, so an employer budgeting exactly at the SMIC can still fail the salary condition. French drivers read the indemnites de deplacement as closely as the coefficient, so state them in the advert.
Permis C for a rigid lorry, permis CE for an articulated combination, permis D for a coach or bus. Write permis CE as the primary form and add permis EC alongside it, because both spellings are in live use and a candidate may search either. Baseline ages are eighteen for C1 and C1E, twenty-one for C and CE, and twenty-four for D. C and CE drop to eighteen for a driver holding the initial professional qualification.
FIMO is the initial qualification, at least 140 hours, delivered in centres approved by the regional prefect. A longer route of at least 280 hours, taken as a diploma or professional title, provides the same equivalence and opens the lowest age tiers. FCO is 35 hours every five years, with no grace period once it lapses. The qualification is evidenced by the carte de qualification de conducteur and printed on the licence as code 95. Promotrans runs an approved centre at Mions, near Lyon.
Partly, and the two questions are independent. An EU or EEA licence is valid as it stands. Outside that, exchange runs on the interior ministry’s reciprocity list, which marks each country as Toutes, A et B, or B, and the heavy categories are reachable only where the entry reads Toutes. The exchange must be started within a year of establishing residence. A professional qualification obtained outside the EU or EEA is not recognised, so the driver must take the FIMO again in France.
Because the advert language is almost entirely SPL; Rhône titles run Conducteur SPL, Chauffeur SPL with ADR, Chauffeur SPL on a loader crane and Chauffeur SPL plateau regional, and a permis C driver reading that assumes the job is not for them. SPL means an articulated combination and maps to permis CE; PL means a rigid and maps to permis C. If the vehicle is a rigid, say chauffeur PL in the headline and permis C in the requirements.
Concretely, because the region is large and a driver judges the commute before the pay. Saying Lyon when the depot is at Saint-Quentin-Fallavier or Saint-Vulbas costs you applications from people who would happily take the job. Name the depot commune, the main axis the work runs on, and whether the driver is home nightly, because a Rhône Valley trunk, an Auvergne collection round and an Alpine run to Italy are three different working weeks.
Four agglomerations operate them, and they are not equivalent. Lyon restricts goods vehicles at Crit’Air 3 and worse, with a tighter central zone threshold flagged for later. Grenoble bars lorries at Crit’Air 3 and worse permanently across a twenty-seven-commune zone, which is stricter than Lyon. Saint-Étienne and Clermont-Ferrand restrict unclassified vehicles. They are work in progress: the Fréjus tunnel runs almost thirteen kilometres from Modane in Savoie to Bardonecchia in Piedmont and now has a second tube, so maintenance no longer forces alternating traffic. Mont Blanc offers the second road crossing. Both publish maintenance calendars; a separate calendar governs heavy-vehicle movement restrictions across France and Italy; and the Maurienne rail route is open again after a long closure caused by a rockslide.
There are three worth knowing. Goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes with Euro 0, Euro 1, or Euro 2 emissions are prohibited unless they hold a joint authorisation from the prefect of Savoie and the prefect of Turin. Convoys wider than 3.20 metres must request passage approval from the motorway operator and travel escorted. The tunnel is an ADR category C route, so dangerous goods are limited and authorised loads are accompanied by the operator’s patrol vehicles.
In designated mountain communes it does, and the perimeter is set commune by commune by prefectoral order rather than by a fixed regional line. The obligation runs from the start of November to the end of March across the Alps and the Massif Central. Hence, it touches the Savoie, Haute-Savoie, Isère, Drôme, Ardèche, Loire and the Auvergne departments. The rule that bites is on articulated vehicles: they must carry chains able to fit at least two drive wheels even when already on winter tyres.
