South Savo is lake country with two centres at opposite ends: Mikkeli on the Vt 5 corridor and Savonlinna out east on Vt 14, with Pieksämäki on the railway to the west. Forest covers most of the land and water a quarter of the surface.

One thing worth knowing before you plan a hiring year here: South Savo has driver training at both ends of the region, with Esedu at Kinnarinkatu 3 in Mikkeli, which also runs the route as an apprenticeship, and Samiedu in Savonlinna. Savonlinja runs over 500 buses from Mikkeli with roughly 800 transport professionals, so category D experience is comparatively common here. Publish linja-autonkuljettaja roles with D-kortti and ammattipätevyys, and say whether the work is a town service, a rural route or school transport.
Service logistics is a standing category in this region, not a marginal one, with meal delivery advertised at Kangasniemi during recent sampling. State the licence the round genuinely needs and the hours it runs, because these roles often suit part time and returning drivers.
Wood into Ristiina, Savonlinna and Punkaharju runs on comparatively short hauls from nearby forest. Advertise as yhdistelmäajoneuvonkuljettaja with CE-kortti and name the receiving mill, and be aware that much of this work sits with contractors rather than on open boards.
Andritz builds pulp and paper machinery at Savonlinna, which produces outbound loads needing permits, escorts and route surveys rather than a standard trailer. If that is the vacancy, say so. It is a distinct skill set and it draws a different applicant entirely.
Kaukokiito and Kantola and Koramo both hold terminals in Mikkeli and Savonlinna, and forklift and telehandler roles appear alongside driving. Where the job mixes the two, describe both, and note that forklift use rests on the employer's own written driving permit.
Describe the round, the hours and the vehicle accurately. In a region where much of the driver pool comes from passenger work, a vague goods advert simply gets ignored by the people who could do the job.
South Savo has two centres a long way apart. Mikkeli sits where Vt 5 and Vt 13 cross, with Vt 15 running south to Kotka and Hamina. Savonlinna is reached along Vt 14 from Juva, and Pieksämäki sits west on Vt 23 with the region's marshalling yard.
Describe the route the vehicle actually takes. Around Savonlinna and Puumala the road distance between two points can far exceed the distance across the water, so a shift built from map distances will be wrong.
Recruit at both ends rather than from one. Training runs in Mikkeli and in Savonlinna, so a candidate at either end of the region can qualify without relocating, and an employer with two sites can build two pipelines.
Plan on recruiting continuously. This region lost more residents in absolute terms than any other in Finland in a recent year, so a vacancy filled once locally is not a problem solved.
Say where the ferry crossings fall. Private road associations run cable ferries where bridges do not exist, and a crossing in the route changes both the timing of a round and the competence it needs.

Finnish drivers search in Finnish. An advert written only in English will miss most of the domestic market, and Swedish matters on the west coast and on the islands.
Kuorma-autonkuljettaja is the standard lorry title and linja-autonkuljettaja the bus one. Yhdistelmaajoneuvonkuljettaja covers combination vehicle work, and taysperavaununkuljettaja and puoliperavaununkuljettaja appear where the trailer type is the point.
Distribution work is written as jakelukuljettaja, or as the base title with the work attached, as in elintarvikejakeluun, kappaletavarajakeluun or yojakeluun. CE-kuljettaja is used as a job title in its own right.
Write the licence as C-kortti, CE-kortti or D-kortti. The formal C-luokka form is correct but adverts do not use it, and Finnish employers usually put the category in the headline in brackets rather than burying it in the body.
Ammattipatevyys is the professional competence, carried as code 95. Name it only where the role genuinely needs it.
One term catches employers out. Kuljettajakortti in a Finnish advert means the digital tachograph card, not the competence card, which is the ammattipatevyyskortti. The two are listed separately in real adverts and confusing them will mislead candidates.
Pay is routinely stated as AKT TES mukainen, meaning according to the collective agreement. Adverts also list ADR-kortti and trukkikortti where the work requires them, and tyoturvallisuuskortti is common across logistics roles.
A practical approach is a Finnish advert naming the category and the ammattipatevyys position, with an English version when you also want candidates from outside Finland.

The Finnish Immigration Service, Migri, now decides these applications on its own. The separate labour market decision that the employment office used to issue no longer exists. Two figures shape the offer you can make. The gross salary must reach the published monthly minimum for an employed person, currently 1,600 euros, and supplements such as evening and night work do not count towards it. Driver pay is often built from a base plus supplements, so check the base alone clears the threshold before you advertise.
Availability consideration applies here. Before applying for a driver from outside the EU or EEA, the employer posts the job on Job Market Finland for two weeks on the same terms that the application will carry. The regional work permit guidelines are reviewed twice a year, so check the current position for this region before you plan a timeline.
Employers here may receive applications from drivers based in Finland, elsewhere in the EU and EEA, Switzerland, the wider European region, Asia, Africa, Gulf countries, North America, Latin America and other eligible international markets.
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens may work in Finland without a permit, though a right of residence registration applies beyond three months. Nordic citizens register with the Digital and Population Data Services Agency instead. Licence validity and professional competence requirements still apply to all of them.
Where a Finnish goods operator employs a driver who is a third country national, a driver attestation from Traficom, the kuljettajatodistus, is also required. The operator gives the original to the driver to carry, keeps certified copies and returns it when the employment ends.
A candidate's ability to work here depends on nationality, residence status, professional qualifications, driving licence validity and the requirements of the individual position. Name the licence category in the advert. It is the first thing a Finnish driver looks for, and it belongs in the headline.
Freight work uses C and CE, with C1 and C1E for lighter rigid vehicles. Passenger transport uses D and D1. Van and courier roles sit in category B.
Age limits matter when you are planning a pipeline. C and CE open at twenty one, or at eighteen where the driver holds the full professional competence. D opens at twenty four, reduced to twenty three, twenty one or eighteen depending on the qualification held.
Professional drivers in the C and D categories need ammattipatevyys, shown as code 95 on the licence. The initial qualification runs two hundred and eighty hours, or one hundred and forty on the accelerated route by age band, and periodic training runs thirty five hours every five years.
One point widens your field considerably. A driver who already holds competence in one branch can add the other with a thirty five or seventy hour course rather than repeating the initial qualification. That is the route to move an experienced lorry driver into bus work, or the reverse, though it does not by itself grant the licence category.
Foreign licences need care. An EU or EEA licence is valid in Finland while it remains valid. A licence from a contracting state can be exchanged, but a lorry or bus category always requires the full Finnish driving examination, theory and practical. Licences from other recognised states require an examination for every category.
A professional competence obtained outside the EU or EEA is not recognised in Finland. An experienced driver arriving from outside Europe will need the Finnish qualification, or one issued by another EU or EEA state, before they can do the work. Budget realistic time for that rather than discovering it after an offer.
A driver card for the digital tachograph is required on in scope work, and ADR training where the load needs it. A medical certificate applies to the heavy categories and renews more often with age. Say which of these the role actually needs, and remember that verifying the original documents remains the employer's responsibility.

Heavy goods work exists, but it sits with contractors serving the mills rather than on open boards.

A large share of experienced professional drivers in this region therefore hold D-kortti and a passenger background rather than timber or trunk experience.
They are, and they exist in very few other parts of Finland. Water covers about a quarter of South Savo, and the region has roughly 28,000 kilometres of shoreline, so private road associations operate cable ferries where a bridge is impractical. Two of the sixteen driver vacancies visible on a recent sample day were ferry operator posts near Savonlinna.
It should. With a quarter of the route underwater, the road distance between two points near Savonlinna or Puumala can be far longer than the distance across the water between them. Shift lengths and delivery windows built from map distances will be wrong. Describe the route the vehicle takes, including any ferry crossing, and an applicant can judge the job properly.
In two places, which is unusual for a region this size. Etelä-Savon ammattiopisto, known as Esedu, delivers the combination vehicle driver path of the logistics basic qualification (180 competence points) at Kinnarinkatu 3 in Mikkeli, and the same route is available through apprenticeship. Samiedu in Savonlinna offers the logistics basic qualification with a truck driver path.
The seasonal swing here is the clearest in eastern Finland. Mikkeli had 10,345 summer cottages and Savonlinna 8,765 at the last national count, second and fourth among all Finnish municipalities, and tourism accounts for 3.9 per cent of regional output against 2.5 per cent nationally. Delivery, food, and waste volumes rise accordingly, and the Savonlinna Opera Festival adds to that.
Faster than anywhere else in Finland in absolute terms. South Savo lost 1,227 residents in a single recent year, the largest fall recorded by any Finnish region, and the projection points to a continuing loss of roughly 774 a year. An employer here should treat recruitment as an ongoing activity that reaches well beyond the region, rather than a task repeated occasionally.
Not directly. The region has no crossing of its own, and no published source attributes a transport employment effect here. What is documented is indirect. Since the eastern border closed and the Saimaa route to the Baltic stopped functioning, export volume that might once have gone by water moves by road and rail, with Vt 15 towards Kotka and Hamina carrying more of it.

More easily than most employers assume. A driver qualified in one branch can add the other with a 35-hour or 70-hour course rather than repeating the initial qualification. In a region where the experienced pool leans towards passenger work, that rule runs both ways and widens the field for goods and passenger vacancies alike. Say in the advert that you will support it.
You can advertise internationally, and Migri decides the residence permit for an employed person. The TE Office's old partial decision no longer exists. South Savo is not covered by the Sisä-Suomi guideline that lists lorry and special vehicle drivers, so the labour market test applies: the job runs on Job Market Finland for two weeks on the same terms first.
Only from inside the EU or EEA. Finland does not recognise professional competence obtained outside the EU or EEA, so a driver with years of experience elsewhere may still need the Finnish qualification. Licences are treated separately again, and a lorry or bus category requires the full Finnish driving examination even where an exchange is otherwise possible.
