Advertise lastbilsförare work in C-körkort for goods landed by ferry and distributed out of Mariehamn and Jomala. Say whether the round stays on the road-connected main island, because that is the first thing a local applicant wants to know.
Publish rounds serving the outer municipalities, where the government ferries are free and count as part of the road network. Vehicle places are booked through Ålandstrafiken, so state that the day is built around slots rather than driving hours.
Reach CE-körkort holders, kombinationsfordonsförare, for units calling at Långnäs on the Kapellskär to Naantali service. Mention the tax border paperwork, since a run to the mainland is a declared movement rather than a domestic leg.
Advertise winter work such as snow ploughing, which is a recurring category here rather than an afterthought and was live on the local job board when it was checked. Give the season, the hours and whether the contract is expected to repeat.
Publish taxi and bus vacancies, busschaufför in D-körkort, for local services on the main island. The islands' own college trains both lorry and bus drivers in Swedish, so candidates recognise the qualification vocabulary you use.
Describe the ferry legs honestly. In a territory where a round can depend on a booked sailing, a vacancy that reads like mainland distribution will attract applicants who leave once they meet the timetable.
Åland lies between the Finnish and Swedish coasts. Mariehamn and Jomala hold most of the population and most of the distribution work, the rest of the main island is reached by road, and the outer municipalities are reached by ferry.
Recruitment concentrates in and around Mariehamn and Jomala, where the depots and the people are. An advert should say immediately whether the round stays on the main island or crosses to the outer islands, because the two jobs differ.
For archipelago work the binding constraint is the sailing rather than the driving time. Vehicle places are booked through Ålandstrafiken, so dispatch carries a booking step and a missed slot moves the whole day rather than minutes of it.
Långnäs in Lumparland, about 30 kilometres from Mariehamn, is where the Sweden to Finland freight service calls. A trailer run through it crosses a fiscal frontier, so the consignment carries a customs declaration although both ends are in Finland.
Expect to look beyond the islands. When the territory's Swedish-language job board was checked it carried no driver vacancies at all, which says more about how thin the local pool is than about how much work exists.

Finnish drivers search in Finnish. An advert written only in English will miss most of the domestic market, and Swedish matters on the west coast and on the islands.
Kuorma-autonkuljettaja is the standard lorry title and linja-autonkuljettaja the bus one. Yhdistelmaajoneuvonkuljettaja covers combination vehicle work, and taysperavaununkuljettaja and puoliperavaununkuljettaja appear where the trailer type is the point.
Distribution work is written as jakelukuljettaja, or as the base title with the work attached, as in elintarvikejakeluun, kappaletavarajakeluun or yojakeluun. CE-kuljettaja is used as a job title in its own right.
Write the licence as C-kortti, CE-kortti or D-kortti. The formal C-luokka form is correct but adverts do not use it, and Finnish employers usually put the category in the headline in brackets rather than burying it in the body.
Ammattipatevyys is the professional competence, carried as code 95. Name it only where the role genuinely needs it.
One term catches employers out. Kuljettajakortti in a Finnish advert means the digital tachograph card, not the competence card, which is the ammattipatevyyskortti. The two are listed separately in real adverts and confusing them will mislead candidates.
Pay is routinely stated as AKT TES mukainen, meaning according to the collective agreement. Adverts also list ADR-kortti and trukkikortti where the work requires them, and tyoturvallisuuskortti is common across logistics roles.
A practical approach is a Finnish advert naming the category and the ammattipatevyys position, with an English version when you also want candidates from outside Finland.
Swedish is the sole official language here, so the advert is written in Swedish and Finnish terms will not carry it. Use körkort for the licence, with the category written as C-körkort, CE, C1, C1E or D-körkort, yrkeskompetens for the professional competence, grundläggande yrkeskompetens for the initial qualification, fortbildning for periodic training, yrkeskompetensbevis for the card and kod 95 for the licence entry. The driver is a chaufför, a lastbilsförare, a kombinationsfordonsförare or a busschaufför, goods and passenger work are godstransport and persontransport, the tachograph card is a förarkort and a dangerous goods permit is an ADR-körtillstånd. One practical warning to plan around: when the Åland Swedish-language job board was checked it carried no driver vacancies at all, so an employer here should expect to recruit from Sweden or from the Swedish-speaking mainland coast rather than from a queue of local applicants.

The Finnish Immigration Service, Migri, now decides these applications on its own. The separate labour market decision that the employment office used to issue no longer exists. Two figures shape the offer you can make. The gross salary must reach the published monthly minimum for an employed person, currently 1,600 euros, and supplements such as evening and night work do not count towards it. Driver pay is often built from a base plus supplements, so check the base alone clears the threshold before you advertise.
Finnish immigration law applies in full on Åland and Migri decides the permit, but two things work differently from the mainland. Migri keeps no permanent office on the islands and receives clients by appointment only, every few weeks, at Statens ämbetsverk in Mariehamn, with mainland service points available as an alternative, so that appointment window belongs at the front of a hiring timeline rather than at the end. And the work permit guideline that applies here is issued separately by the Åland regional government rather than by one of the ten elinvoimakeskukset, none of which covers the islands. Its contents were not obtained for this page, so check with the Åland authorities what it says about driver occupations before assuming either that a labour market test is required or that it is not.
Employers here may receive applications from drivers based in Finland, elsewhere in the EU and EEA, Switzerland, the wider European region, Asia, Africa, Gulf countries, North America, Latin America and other eligible international markets.
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens may work in Finland without a permit, though a right of residence registration applies beyond three months. Nordic citizens register with the Digital and Population Data Services Agency instead. Licence validity and professional competence requirements still apply to all of them.
Where a Finnish goods operator employs a driver who is a third country national, a driver attestation from Traficom, the kuljettajatodistus, is also required. The operator gives the original to the driver to carry, keeps certified copies and returns it when the employment ends.
A candidate's ability to work here depends on nationality, residence status, professional qualifications, driving licence validity and the requirements of the individual position. Name the licence category in the advert. It is the first thing a Finnish driver looks for, and it belongs in the headline.
Freight work uses C and CE, with C1 and C1E for lighter rigid vehicles. Passenger transport uses D and D1. Van and courier roles sit in category B.
Age limits matter when you are planning a pipeline. C and CE open at twenty one, or at eighteen where the driver holds the full professional competence. D opens at twenty four, reduced to twenty three, twenty one or eighteen depending on the qualification held.
Professional drivers in the C and D categories need ammattipatevyys, shown as code 95 on the licence. The initial qualification runs two hundred and eighty hours, or one hundred and forty on the accelerated route by age band, and periodic training runs thirty five hours every five years.
One point widens your field considerably. A driver who already holds competence in one branch can add the other with a thirty five or seventy hour course rather than repeating the initial qualification. That is the route to move an experienced lorry driver into bus work, or the reverse, though it does not by itself grant the licence category.
Foreign licences need care. An EU or EEA licence is valid in Finland while it remains valid. A licence from a contracting state can be exchanged, but a lorry or bus category always requires the full Finnish driving examination, theory and practical. Licences from other recognised states require an examination for every category.
A professional competence obtained outside the EU or EEA is not recognised in Finland. An experienced driver arriving from outside Europe will need the Finnish qualification, or one issued by another EU or EEA state, before they can do the work. Budget realistic time for that rather than discovering it after an offer.
A driver card for the digital tachograph is required on in scope work, and ADR training where the load needs it. A medical certificate applies to the heavy categories and renews more often with age. Say which of these the role actually needs, and remember that verifying the original documents remains the employer's responsibility.

You supply the advert in Swedish and it goes onto the portal. Legally operating transport businesses on the islands: hauliers and distribution operators, shipping and ferry companies recruiting shore-based drivers, construction and seasonal contractors, and licensed passenger transport operators. Only real vacancies belong here, advertised on the terms that will actually apply. A company establishing itself on the islands, rather than already trading there, should settle näringsrätt before it starts advertising.
It does not, and this is the point stated wrongly most often. Right of domicile governs voting and standing in Åland parliamentary elections, acquiring or leasing land, and conducting business. A person can live and work on the islands without it, so a driver vacancy should not screen for it. Requiring it would exclude much of the pool an employer here actually has.
Not as of right, and this is where Åland departs from every other Finnish region. Näringsrätt, the right to conduct a trade, can be restricted for those without right of domicile under the Act on the Autonomy of Åland. Legal entities apply to the Åland government, and a partnership or company normally needs a partner or board member holding right of domicile or five years' continuous residence. Temporary näringsrätt can be applied for.
Swedish. It is the sole official language, and regional, municipal and state authorities on the islands work in Swedish only. Driver training here is delivered in Swedish, so the initial qualification and the periodic training will be too. A driver recruited from mainland Finland who speaks only Finnish will find the administrative side of the job hard even where the driving itself is straightforward.
Very few, and the figures are specific. When the Åland employment authority's job board was checked it carried 43 vacancies across every occupation in the territory, of which three touched transport: a taxi driver, a seasonal snow ploughing contract and a ferry company inspector. Not one goods vehicle or distribution driver vacancy was advertised. About 30,900 people live on the islands in total.
Off the islands, and in Swedish. Sweden and the Swedish-speaking coast of mainland Finland are the natural sourcing markets, which reverses the advice that fits every other Finnish region. The islands' own college also trains professional drivers, but its basic qualification intake runs once a year, in the autumn, so an employer who misses the cycle waits a year for locally trained entrants.
The Åland Police, not Traficom, and it is recorded as code 95 on the driving licence itself rather than as a separate card, so the driver presents the licence at a roadside check. The framework is the EU one: a 280 hour initial qualification, a 140 hour route for specified ages and local transport roles, and 35 hours of refresher training in each five year cycle.
The competence framework here is the same EU one that applies across the EEA, so a driver qualified in another EEA state holds a qualification built on the same rules. What could not be established is whether an Åland-issued code 95 is automatically recognised on the Finnish mainland, so if the work crosses over, confirm that direction with the Åland Police and with Traficom before deploying anyone.
Goods vehicle categories start at 21, or at 18 where the full professional competence is already held, and the bus category starts at 24, falling to 23, 21 or 18 according to the qualification behind it. The islands' college gives entry ages of 21 for lorry and 23 for bus, or 21 for local routes under 50 kilometres. Write the requirement as C-körkort or CE, which is the form used here.
